The Atlanta Braves have placed outfielder Matt Diaz on the 15-day disabled list with a bruised right thumb. They also activated left-hander Jonny Venters from the DL and added right-hander Randall Delgado from Triple-A Gwinnett before Saturday's day-night doubleheader against Washington. Diaz batted .222 in 51 games. Out since July 5 with an impingement in his pitching elbow, Venters' lone rehab assignment came Friday for Gwinnett. Delgado is scheduled to pitch the nightcap Saturday. He is 4-9 with a 4.52 ERA in 16 starts for Atlanta. The Nationals recalled lefty John Lannan from Triple-A Syracuse and reinstated outfielder Xavier Nady before designating him for assignment. Lannan is also scheduled to start the second game of the doubleheader. He went 6-9 with a 4.89 ERA in 18 starts with Syracuse this season. He led the Nationals with 10 wins last season.

Game Day Pictures: Gwinnett Braves vs Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees 7-20-12

Jonny Venters & Ruben Gotay laughing! Jonny was ready to come off the DL and the team sent him to Gwinnett to have a few rehab innings. He threw six pitches for three outs last night and was in the dugout in DC by this afternoon. That's my boy. :) So Susan and I went to cheer on our favorite Brave, and although we got rained out, we had a great time! The G-Braves website...

Atlanta Braves Players not Impressed by Melky Cabrera's Antics

Atlanta Braves fans weren't exactly the biggest supporters of Melky Cabrera during his stint with the club in 2010, and it seems the San Francisco Giants left fielder didn't make himself anymore friends during the three-game series that concluded Thursday in his first trip back to Atlanta since being released at the end of his only year with the Braves...

Sheets shines, Braves split doubleheader with Nats

The Atlanta Braves wasted a chance to make a big dent in the Washington Nationals' NL East lead. After Ben Sheets sparkled in a win in the opening-game of the doubleheader, the Braves failed to protect a two-run lead in the night cap, losing 5-2 Saturday night. Bryce Harper returned from an injury sustained in the opener to single and score as a pinch-hitter, Roger Bernadina...

Marlins head home to face Braves

The Atlanta Braves just squandered a great chance to move closer to the top of the NL East, but they're still in a good spot. The Miami Marlins, meanwhile, haven't been in a worse position all season. Atlanta goes for a fourth straight victory at Miami on Monday night when the Marlins try to avoid a season high-tying sixth straight defeat. After back-to-back wins over...

Game Day Pictures: Braves vs Giants 7-19-12

Huddy yoga   What kind of crazy person sits in section 105 for a noon start? This girl, and three of her twitterfriends. Jane invited Sarah, Carlie, and I to share her friend's corporate seats and we had a ton of fun! Because the sun was so blazing and there wasn't on-field batting practice, I didn't take as many pics as usual. Here are a few, though... Mike Minor was...

Braves top Nationals in 11th innning

Paul Janish hit a run-scoring bloop single in the 11th inning to complete the Atlanta Braves' wild 11-10 comeback win against the Washington Nationals on Friday night. The Nationals led 9-0 after five innings but Atlanta scored four runs in both the sixth and eighth innings and took a 10-9 lead in the top of the ninth on Michael Bourn's two-run triple. Craig Kimbrel blew...

Braves rally from nine down, top Nats in 11th

Braves salvage one vs Giants, head to D.C.

Hoping to continue their 7-game winning streak, the Braves were derailed by the San Francisco Giants Tuesday night. They then lost the second game of the series after midnight in the 11th inning. The Braves were able to salvage the third game of the series, avoiding the sweep, behind an awesome outing by veteran Tim Hudson. It was an interesting series for veteran Chipper Jones....

Braves-Nationals Preview

Taking nearly two years off didn't seem to bother Ben Sheets. Now, he'll try to build on his dazzling return and help the Atlanta Braves gain more ground on the NL East-leading Washington Nationals in the opener of a day-night doubleheader Saturday. The Braves (51-41) signed Sheets to a minor league contract July 1 after he hadn't pitched in the majors since July 19...

On Lannan Replacing Strasburg

One of my favorite baseball happenings of 2012 occurred yesterday, when John Lannan returned from minor-league exile to stop the Nats’ two-game skid and extend their NL East lead to 2.5 games. It was a big game, as far as July goes, both for the team and the man, who was demoted this spring in favor of Ross Detwiler and Chien-Ming Wang after being the rotation’s bedrock through...

Lannan, Detwiler Fuel Series Split Against Braves

Things didn’t look all that good for the Washington Nationals half way through this four-game series against the Atlanta Braves. But a former Nats number one starter and the best number five pitcher in baseball had something to say about that. Friday night was a particularly hard loss for the Nats, as they had a nine-run lead through five innings, which they eventually blew in...

No pressure, John...

And so, after the worst soul crushing loss in the brief history of the Washington Nationals on Friday night, followed by a lifeless loss in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader which cut the NL East lead over the Braves to a flimsy game and a half, the Nationals turn to John Lannan -- back in the fold for a day from his exile in Syracuse. Welcome back, John. Don'...
