The Atlanta Braves placed third baseman Chipper Jones on the 15-day disabled list after Friday night's game with a leg bruise. The move was back-dated to Wednesday, when he last played. He had been pinch-hitting since May 18. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said he may not be ready when he is eligible to come off the DL on June 7. "It's not getting better and we are starting to play a little bit short-handed," he told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "It's not fair for him and it's not fair for the team." Jones was injured when a one-hopper hit by the Tampa Bay Rays' B.J. Upton got him on the left leg.

Braves must learn to win without Chipper

ATLANTA The Braves need to figure out how to win without Chipper Jones, because he wont be around for a couple of weeks. And thats nothing compared to next year, when he wont be here at all. They seem as bewildered and confused as lost children when Jones isnt tending the flock, and now that hes on the 15-day disabled list with his bruised calf of many colors, the Braves have to...

Braves still without Jones, McCann against Nats

ATLANTA (AP) -- Chipper Jones is missing his seventh straight start because of a bruised leg, and Brian McCann is out for the fourth straight game with flu-like symptoms, leaving the Braves short-handed against the Nationals. There was still swelling and discoloration in Jones' left foot, ankle and calf on Friday. He was hit by a grounder May 18 at Tampa Bay. Manager Fredi...

Braves pitching depth has eroded quickly

As the old adage goes, you can never have too much pitching. Frank Wren and Fredi Gonzalez now understand that as well as anyone. During the offseason it seemed as if the Braves had enough depth on the mound to put together two full rotations, as BravesWire’s Kent Covington outlined in February. Now, the Braves find themselves hard-pressed to fill out one. Through 48 games, Atlanta...

Chipper honored by Reds

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Braves third baseman Chipper Jones received a base as a memento of his final trip to Cincinnati. The Reds honored Jones before the final game of their series on Thursday. They've used bases with Jones' name on the side in all four games. Reds third baseman Scott Rolen presented Jones with one of the bases in a frame. The Reds also showed a montage of...

Braves activate Jones from DL

Chipper Jones has been activated from the 15-day disabled list and is in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Braves optioned outfielder Jose Constanza to Triple-A Gwinnett. As expected, the Braves also called up right-hander Julio Teheran from Gwinnett to start Sunday's game and optioned backup catcher J.C. Boscan to Gwinnett. Jones...

Game Day Pictures: Braves vs Nationals 5-25-12

Mac is GREAT at catching. Tammy, SJ, Tammy's friends and their new baby, Catherine and I went to the game Friday night. They've played pretty well at the other games I've attended this year -- what happened tonight, boys?! Well, a lot of them were/are sick. MattE seriously looked like he was going to keel over. When their illnesses have run their course, I think we'...

Dugout Digest - the struggling Braves

Just one week ago, the Atlanta Braves were in first place in the NL East, 1.5 games ahead of the Washington Nationals, sitting ten games above .500 with a +40 run differential. Today, they're in fourth place, three games out and four games above .500, and that run differential is down to +25. The key stat? The lack of starting third baseman Chipper Jones, who hasn't started...

Braves struggle to score in opener vs. Nats

ATLANTA (AP) -- Rick Ankiel hit a two-run triple in Washington's four-run first inning, Ryan Zimmerman padded the lead with a three-run double in the seventh and the first-place Nationals beat the slumping Atlanta Braves 7-4 Friday night. Right-hander Chien-Ming Wang (1-0) won in his season debut. He gave up one run in three innings after taking over for Ross Detwiler in the...

Braves battered by Harper, Nationals

ATLANTA (AP) -- Bryce Harper homered and Danny Espinosa added a three-run shot to help Washington strengthen its hold on first place in the NL East by beating the reeling Atlanta Braves 8-4 on Saturday. Stephen Strasburg (5-1) was not sharp but still won. He set a season high with four walks while giving up four runs and six hits in five innings. He had six strikeouts. The Braves...

Braves losing skid hits 7 in loss to Nationals

ATLANTA (AP) -- Bryce Harper hit his second homer in two days, Gio Gonzalez gave up only one hit in seven innings and the Nationals beat the struggling Atlanta Braves 7-2 on Sunday night to complete a three-game sweep. Washington's first sweep at Turner Field in three years left the Braves with a seven-game losing streak, their worst skid since dropping nine straight in 2010...

Series Spotlight: Nationals at Braves (May 25-27)

This will be the first matchup all season between the two top teams in the NL East. The Nationals are currently at the top of the division by a game over the Braves, and are coming off of a series win in Philadelphia, while the Braves went to Cincinnati and got swept by the Reds in a Cincy homer barrage. This series won't decide the division for the season, but it WILL cast the...

Nationals 8, Braves 4

Bryce Harper homered and Danny Espinosa added a three-run shot to help Washington strengthen its hold on first place in the NL East by beating the reeling Atlanta Braves 8-4 on Saturday. Stephen Strasburg (5-1) was not sharp but still won. He set a season high with four walks while giving up four runs and six hits in five innings. He had six strikeouts. The Braves' season-worst...

Nationals and Braves Battle for NL East Lead

This weekend at Turner Field the Washington Nationals (26-18) and the Atlanta Braves (26-20) will fight for a hold on first place in the National League East. The two teams are coming into the series with just one game separating them in the standings, but one team has the opportunity to differentiate itself as the clear front runner in the division. Atlanta has flirted with first...

How Important Is Nationals' Weekend Series Against Braves?

I have a hard time calling a series in late-May important. The MLB season just passed the quarter mark, and there are still well over a hundred games to play, which means that every last place team in baseball has a chance to rebound, and every first place team in baseball has a chance to falter. But this weekend’s series against the Atlanta Braves, who the Washington Nationals...
