PHILADELPHIA -- Humberto Quintero and Ryan Howard hit home runs to give Cliff Lee a five-run cushion, and the Philadelphia Phillies held on for a 5-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night. Dan Uggla hit a three-run shot, and the Braves snapped Lee's streak of 11 straight games pitching at least seven innings and allowing three earned runs or less. But Lee (10-2) still won his eighth straight decision. He allowed four runs and eight hits in 6 1-3 innings. J.C. Ramirez and Antonio Bastardo combined for five outs. Jonathan Papelbon finished for his 18th save in 22 tries. Right fielder John Mayberry Jr. helped Papelbon with a sliding catch on Brian McCann's sinking liner for the second out. Paul Maholm (9-7) gave up five runs -- four earned -- and nine hits in six innings. Tim Hudson was scheduled to start for the Braves, but he was pushed back one day because of a stiff neck. Desperate to avoid falling further behind in the NL East standings, the Phillies (42-45) open...

Fightins Quotables: Wathan Speaks on Biddle, Wright, Franco, Gillies and more

I sat down with Double-A Reading manager Dusty Wathan on Thursday to chat about several key names in the Phillies’ developmental ranks.  Among the topics of discussion were top Phils prospect lefty pitcher Jesse Biddle, fast rising third base prospect Maikel Franco, struggling left-handed starter Austin Wright and outfielder Tyson Gillies, who earned a promotion from Reading to...

Howard to DL, Ruf Recalled

Not long before Saturday evening’s contest against the Atlanta Braves, the Phillies announced that ailing first baseman Ryan Howard would be placed on the disabled list, as he has been battling left knee issues for several weeks. The lefty hitting slugger was scratched from Saturday night’s lineup following batting practice that afternoon.  In 80 games this year, Howard has...

Fightins Quotables: Colvin, Joseph, Dugan, Collier Speak

Following Friday’s night’s 8-0 loss by the Reading Fightins at the division rival Trenton Thunder (Yankees affiliate), I spoke with several players.  Righty starter Brody Colvin, who took the loss in the contest after being charged with eight earned runs over two innings, offered his thoughts on a discouraging season, catcher Tommy Joseph spoke about dealing with and recovering...

Cliff Lee, Domonic Brown Named To National League All-Star Squad

The results are in: the Phillies will be represented in the National League All-Star team by pitcher Cliff Lee and Domonic Brown. Full roster posted shortly.

Phillies 5, Braves 4

A strong offense and a solid bullpen performance helped Cliff Lee overcome his worst start in two months. Humberto Quintero and Ryan Howard hit home runs to give Lee a five-run cushion, and the Philadelphia Phillies held on for a 5-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night. Dan Uggla hit a three-run shot, and the Braves snapped Lee's streak of 11 straight games pitching...

Gonzalez Ejected Braves Drop Third Straight

The Atlanta Braves dropped their 3rd straight game on Friday night.  A late inning comeback bid fell one run short as the Braves were beaten by the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-4. The Phillies got the game’s scoring started in the 1st inning of Friday’s game.  Ryan Howard grounded into fielder’s choice to Freddie Freeman.  Freeman’s throw to 2nd went into left field allowing...

Braves Hammer Phillies

The Braves had plenty to celebrate tonight. (Photo: AP) The Phillies are the most unpredictable team game-to-game. Sometimes they come out and play well, like last night, and sometimes, well, they look like they don’t belong anywhere near a Major League baseball diamond. Tonight’s game was an example of the latter. The Phillies combined a bad start with absolutely no offense...

Phillies 6, Pirates 4

Major league loss leader Cole Hamels pitched seven strong innings, Carlos Ruiz hit a tiebreaking single and the Philadelphia Phillies beat Gerrit Cole and the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-4 Thursday. Hamels (3-11) gave up one earned run and five hits, striking out eight without a walk. The former World Series MVP won for the first time since June 5. Cole (4-1) lost for the first time in...

Ruf Times Ahead

Amaro is taking this home stand to figure out if the Phillies should be sellers or buyers at the trade deadline. The answer is simple- sell! Trade chips: Chooch, Papelbon, Lee, both Youngs, and Utley. Personally, I keep Utley unless the package is ridiculous and Lee, because they need an ace. Chooch is old and worn down. Michael nor Delmon can field their position. Papelbon is...

Well-Deserved

Photo by Richard Wilkins Jr. Well, the Phillies will have two All-Stars, both of which are well deserved. Normally I'd say a team with a losing record should get one All-Star, but neither of them is undeserving. In the case of Cliff Lee, he's a regular now, headed to his...

Phillies, Kyle Kendrick Take On Tim Hudson, Braves As Ryan Howard is Scratched

Tonight the Phillies will take on the Atlanta Braves at Citizens Bank Park for a 7:15 first pitch. The reason that the start is delayed is that beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Fox, the All-Star selection show will air prior to all games broadcast regionally on Fox. The Phillies-Braves matchup...

Saturday’s Goofs Lead to Phillies Closed-Door Meeting

Apparently so. According to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, Phillies management was not happy with some of the goings-on during Saturday’s 13-4 blowout loss on National TV. So much so, they closed the doors and had a meeting about it. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Friday the team needs to play well before the All-Star break or there could be changes to the 25-man roster. So when...
