The Reds got right-hander Todd Redmond from Atlanta for shortstop Paul Janish in a swap of minor leaguers on Saturday.
Redmond went 6-6 with a 3.58 ERA in 18 starts for Triple-A Gwinnett this season. The 27-year-old pitcher was assigned to Triple-A Louisville.
General manager Walt Jocketty said the trade gives the Reds some pitching depth in the minors. The Reds have used only five starters through the first 87 games this season, a franchise record.
The pitching staff has kept the Reds in contention in the NL Central. The staff ERA of 3.39 was Cincinnati's best at the All-Star break since 1990.
Janish, 29, batted .237 in 49 games at Louisville. He played in 324 games for the Reds from 2008-11, batting .221 with seven homers and 70 RBIs.

CINCINNATI For a lame duck, Dusty Baker doesnt waddle when he walks and in fact he walks like a man and talks like a man.His contract expires after this year and despite having his team in first place most of the season, the Cincinnati Reds manager hasnt heard the first peep from the front office about a contract extension.Im getting tired of getting asked that question everywhere...
This isnt like 2006, when former Cardinals manager Tony La Russa benched third baseman Scott Rolen twice during the playoffs. Back then, Rolen was not happy.
He had given himself to the team physically during the regular season, playing 142 games with an ailing shoulder. He then proved his point to La Russa after starting the postseason 1 for 11, batting .351 with a .955 OPS over...
Chapman puts the finishing touches on a
come-from-behind win on Friday
The Reds returned to action on Friday night for the first time in nearly five days and for the first time at home since June 27th. So, naturally the Queen City faithful were anxious for their chance to cheer on their beloved Redlegs to victory. And that's exactly what they got to do in this one as Cincinnati...
The Cincinnati Reds hope to be buyers at July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, but general manager Walt Jocketty knows it's going to be tough to get deals done. Cincinnati would like to add a leadoff man, a cleanup hitter and bench help. "I'm not sure of any of it is possible," Jocketty said, "but that's what we're trying to do." With so many...

The Atlanta Braves purchased the contract of starting pitcher Ben Sheets and optioned Randall Delgado to Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday.

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Scott Rolen hit a tiebreaking two-run single in the eighth inning Sunday night, sending the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-2 victory and three-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Reds' sixth straight win matched their best surge of the season, moved them a season-high 12 games over .500, and jumped them a game ahead of Pittsburgh for the NL Central lead. St...
ATLANTA -- Freddie Freeman hit a three-run home run to cap a six-run fifth inning and the Atlanta Braves beat the New York Mets 6-1 on Sunday, sweeping the three-game series from their division rivals. The Braves made a winner of Ben Sheets (1-0), who took the mound almost exactly two years from the date of his last major-league start, July 19, 2010. Sheets allowed two hits, both...
ATLANTA -- The power at Turner Field went out with a bang with one strike on New York Mets catcher Josh Thole in the second inning Friday. That should have been a bad omen for the Mets, already down 2-0 to the Braves, but New York made a game of it before the Braves clamped down for a 7-5 win. "We were able to hold on," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. After spotting...
ATLANTA - The Braves and Mets couldn't seem to close the door on each other Saturday, each team giving up the lead almost as soon as it got it. But the Braves got the lead last, winning 8-7 on the strength of a three-run eighth. Anthony Varvaro (1-0) got the win; Bobby Parnell (2-2) took the loss. The Mets had increased their lead to 7-5 in the top of the eighth before...
The animosity and ill feelings from the 2010 brawl still exist, if only in the heated words exchanged between Reds manager Dusty Baker and former Cardinals bench boss Tony La Russa last week. Old rivals Baker and La Russa went at it again, this time over La Russa’s selections for the All-Star game in Kansas [...]
