Braves pitcher Brandon Beachy left Saturday night's game against Baltimore with right elbow soreness. Beachy retired his first 11 batters and was leading the majors with a 1.89 ERA when he was pulled in the fourth inning. The Braves announced the injury was ''recurring elbow soreness'' and said he will be evaluated. After walking Chris Davis on six pitches with two out, Beachy stopped in front of the mound and signaled for catcher Brian McCann that he was injured. He walked off the field during a mound visit from manager Fredi Gonzalez. Rookie Anthony Varvaro took his place and immediately gave up Matt Reynolds' two-run single that put the Orioles ahead 2-0. Beachy allowed no hits and one run, struck out five and walked one. The right-hander made 40 of his 57 pitches for strikes. He was 0-3 with a 3.47 ERA in his previous four starts. Beachy had seven days of rest following his last start, a no-decision June 8 against Toronto. After announcing the decision to give Beachy extra time off, Gonzalez said the pitcher had no injury issues.

Braves look for answers to pitching problems

General manager Frank Wren and manager Fredi Gonzalez have gotten the team into a pitching pickle that they'll spend Thursday's off day trying to sort out. Two weeks ago, on May 29, right-hander Kris Medlen, the most versatile man in the bullpen, was sent down to Class AAA Gwinnett to get stretched out with the intention of coming back as part of the rotation. That's...

ATLANTA (AP) -- Jason Hammel pitched a one-hitter for his first career shutout, allowing only Jason Heyward's two-out single in the seventh inning, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Atlanta Braves 5-0 on Saturday night. There have already been five no-hitters in the majors this season, including three this month, and Hammel made a strong bid to add to the list. Hammel struck...

Random Thoughts About the Atlanta Series

The Orioles were in Atlanta over the weekend and I made it out to all three games as the Orioles took the series. Here are some varied observations:* I got to watch the Orioles pitching staff throw 20.1 straight scoreless innings this weekend. If you ever get a chance to do that in person, I highly recommend it. It was the funnest.* This is not a new revelation. I have lived in the...

Brandon’s Elbow Hurts Like A Son Of A Beachy

Brandon Beachy left Saturday’s start with a sore elbow.  Usually when pitchers have a sore elbow it means one of two things.  One, they’re going on the DL for a long period of time.  Or two, they’re going to say they’re going on the DL for only 15 days but it will be a long time.  Yeah, those are kinda the same things, but it adds a little flare when I break them up into...
