Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons is out of the lineup against the Chicago Cubs with a sprained left thumb.
Center fielder B.J. Upton replaced Simmons in the leadoff spot Saturday night for Atlanta. Ramiro Pena was set to start at shortstop and bat eighth.
Simmons was injured while sliding headfirst into second on a stolen base in the third inning of Friday night's 4-1 win over Chicago. He stayed in the game and finished 0 for 4 with a run scored and a walk.
Simmons said his thumb swelled up overnight. He hopes to return to the lineup Sunday, adding that he feels fine.
A broken right pinkie landed Simmons on the disabled list for two months last year. He was hurt sliding headfirst into second on July 8 at Philadelphia.

ATLANTA Here are three things we learned from the Braves' 5-1 victory over the Cubs, completing Atlanta's series sweep.
It also marked Chicago's only visit to Turner Field all season (thank expanded Interleague play for that scheduling quirk).

BJ Upton (left) and Justin Upton became the first brothers in major league history to homer to tie, then win a game Saturday against Cubs closer Carlos Marmol.
I mentioned earlier this week how Carlos Marmol has been absolutely dreadful for the Cubs.
Now he’s so bad he’s in the record books.
Marmol allowed the game-tying home run to B.J. Upton, then the walk-off winner to his...
