Chipper Jones is missing his seventh straight start because of a bruised leg, and Brian McCann is out for the fourth straight game with flu-like symptoms, leaving the Braves short-handed against the Nationals. There was still swelling and discoloration in Jones' left foot, ankle and calf on Friday. He was hit by a grounder May 18 at Tampa Bay. Manager Fredi Gonzalez says he hopes Jones can return to the lineup as early as Sunday. The Braves are 19-5 when Jones starts and 7-15 when he is out of the lineup. Gonzalez hopes McCann will play on Saturday. First baseman Freddie Freeman has new contact lenses and sport glasses and is starting against Washington. He has battled vision problems due to dryness in his eyes while wearing contacts.

Braves place Jones on DL

The Atlanta Braves placed third baseman Chipper Jones on the 15-day disabled list after Friday night's game with a leg bruise. The move was back-dated to Wednesday, when he last played. He had been pinch-hitting since May 18. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said he may not be ready when he is eligible to come off the DL on June 7. "It's not getting better and we...

Braves activate Jones from DL

Chipper Jones has been activated from the 15-day disabled list and is in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Braves optioned outfielder Jose Constanza to Triple-A Gwinnett. As expected, the Braves also called up right-hander Julio Teheran from Gwinnett to start Sunday's game and optioned backup catcher J.C. Boscan to Gwinnett. Jones...

Braves struggle to score in opener vs. Nats

ATLANTA (AP) -- Rick Ankiel hit a two-run triple in Washington's four-run first inning, Ryan Zimmerman padded the lead with a three-run double in the seventh and the first-place Nationals beat the slumping Atlanta Braves 7-4 Friday night. Right-hander Chien-Ming Wang (1-0) won in his season debut. He gave up one run in three innings after taking over for Ross Detwiler in the...

Braves battered by Harper, Nationals

ATLANTA (AP) -- Bryce Harper homered and Danny Espinosa added a three-run shot to help Washington strengthen its hold on first place in the NL East by beating the reeling Atlanta Braves 8-4 on Saturday. Stephen Strasburg (5-1) was not sharp but still won. He set a season high with four walks while giving up four runs and six hits in five innings. He had six strikeouts. The Braves...

Chipper honored by Reds

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Braves third baseman Chipper Jones received a base as a memento of his final trip to Cincinnati. The Reds honored Jones before the final game of their series on Thursday. They've used bases with Jones' name on the side in all four games. Reds third baseman Scott Rolen presented Jones with one of the bases in a frame. The Reds also showed a montage of...

Nationals 8, Braves 4

Bryce Harper homered and Danny Espinosa added a three-run shot to help Washington strengthen its hold on first place in the NL East by beating the reeling Atlanta Braves 8-4 on Saturday. Stephen Strasburg (5-1) was not sharp but still won. He set a season high with four walks while giving up four runs and six hits in five innings. He had six strikeouts. The Braves' season-worst...

Nationals and Braves Battle for NL East Lead

This weekend at Turner Field the Washington Nationals (26-18) and the Atlanta Braves (26-20) will fight for a hold on first place in the National League East. The two teams are coming into the series with just one game separating them in the standings, but one team has the opportunity to differentiate itself as the clear front runner in the division. Atlanta has flirted with first...

Series Spotlight: Nationals at Braves (May 25-27)

This will be the first matchup all season between the two top teams in the NL East. The Nationals are currently at the top of the division by a game over the Braves, and are coming off of a series win in Philadelphia, while the Braves went to Cincinnati and got swept by the Reds in a Cincy homer barrage. This series won't decide the division for the season, but it WILL cast the...

Braves' Ross, McCann pose big off-season questions

The Atlanta Braves have a 2013 option on catcher Brian McCann, which they will pick up. But things get tricky after that. McCann was scratched from the lineup with flu-like symptoms Wednesday against the Reds, the second consecutive day that's happened. He hasn't had his usual year at the plate, although he is batting .324 (11 for 34) in his last nine games since May 11...

How Important Is Nationals' Weekend Series Against Braves?

I have a hard time calling a series in late-May important. The MLB season just passed the quarter mark, and there are still well over a hundred games to play, which means that every last place team in baseball has a chance to rebound, and every first place team in baseball has a chance to falter. But this weekend’s series against the Atlanta Braves, who the Washington Nationals...

Nationals-Braves Preview

The Washington Nationals lead the NL East heading into Memorial Day weekend, but the Atlanta Braves can join them at the top if a return to Turner Field can help them end their recent slump. With Tim Hudson on the mound, the Braves should feel pretty confident it will. Stellar at home for the past year, Hudson looks to help Atlanta avoid a season-high fifth straight loss and post...

Dugout Digest - the struggling Braves

Just one week ago, the Atlanta Braves were in first place in the NL East, 1.5 games ahead of the Washington Nationals, sitting ten games above .500 with a +40 run differential. Today, they're in fourth place, three games out and four games above .500, and that run differential is down to +25. The key stat? The lack of starting third baseman Chipper Jones, who hasn't started...
