The Atlanta Braves may be bringing back the 'Screaming Savage.' Atlanta plans to re-release the logo the one it used sporadically up until 1989 for team batting practice caps, according to uniform guru Paul Lukas of Uni Watch. The image of the mohawked Native American figure dates back to the franchise's days in Milwaukee, where it first showed up in 1954. It is believed that the team will offer the caps as merchandise as well. Many professional organizations with Native American references have made moves to downplay the "savage" imagery. In similar news, the NFL's Washington Redskins have received significant pushback in recent years for their team name, and the Cleveland Indians have quickly moved farther and farther away from their Chief Wahoo mascot. "Last year the Braves conspicuously avoided using their "screaming Indian" logo as a sleeve patch on their retro alternate jersey -- a welcome move for those of us who oppose the appropriation of Native American imagery in sports," Lukas wrote in his critique. "Unfortunately, it turns out that the logo hasn't been permanently mothballed. Disappointing." Lukas handed the Braves his lone grade of 'F' among the 36 new batting practice caps around MLB. The Braves have yet to release a statement about the change and why it came about after 24 years in relative hiding.
