The Atlanta Braves have announced this morning that on June 8th, they'll be retiring the #29 worn by starter John Smoltz, and inducting him into the team's Hall of Fame. Smoltz spent 20 seasons with the Bravse, with only his final season away from the team (which was split between the Red Sox and Cardinals in a largely disastrous run). Smoltz won the 1996 Cy Young award, and finished his career with 213 wins, 154 saves, a 3.33 ERA, and 3074 strikeouts. He is the only pitcher in baseball history with 200 wins and 150 saves, and Dennis Eckersley is the only other pitcher with 150 wins and 150 strikeouts. Smoltz compares favorably to Eckersley, elected to the Hall of Fame on his first ballot in 2004. Smoltz has more wins, more saves, a better winning percentage, more innings pitched, more strikeouts, and a lower career ERA. Smoltz will likely be elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility in 2015. During his career, Smoltz's major claim to fame was as a p...

Game Day Pictures: Braves vs Brewers 4-13-12

Home Opener! We had beautiful weather and it was so great to see friends, old and new, all around the park. I only went to Friday's game, but it was exactly as exciting as you'd hope. My pictures below, followed by some pro photos... my usher friend Constance says, "I love it when you come to BP. (Stuff) gets interesting when you're here." Heh, I'm glad...

Braves back on track with sweep of Brewers

Do you remember those four straight losses to begin the season? I didn't think so. The Braves don't either. Five wins in a row are a great way of making folks forget the past, more handy than those little strobe lights they used in the "Men in Black" flicks. That dismal start is long gone and everything is clicking for the Braves, who used every part of their...

Series Preview: Mets @ Braves

The 6-3 Mets are headed to the 5-4 Atlanta Braves tonight, for a re-match of the opening series in which the Braves appeared to sleep through their alarm for the early 1pm games. The Braves got swept in New York, but since then have won 5 of their last 6 games. So we need to be careful with making assumptions about this week’s series. Why? Well for starters, the Braves have Chipper...
