TEAMS: Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox
Key Stats: Brennan Boesch is going to be 27 years old and has just completed his 2nd “full” year of big league play. He gave us a solid .283/.341/.458 slash line in 2011 good enough for him to be deserving of a roster spot in 10 team leagues. He increased his power last season hitting two more HR’s in 40 less AB’s over the previous season while also striking out less. We love young players that can increase their power, average, OBP, and SLG in their 2nd seasons while cutting down on the strikeouts. Lucky for us, Boesch fits that profile.
Skeptics Say: He hasn't done well in the 2nd half. Last year that might have been a result of a lower total of at-bats (he did not play in September) and playing through pain. Even if he did put together a decent second half, Boesch would never fall into the elite category as a hitter in any category. ZiPS projects him to regress in his batting average this season, but I can’t see it. He was making better contact last season, hitting a hig...

Detroit Tigers bringing back Brad Penny?
OK, that article header is meant to be taken figuratively, so hang in there with me. If the Detroit Tigers don’t bring back the Brad Penny to be their 5th starter in 2012, they are very likely to bring back a Brad Penny.

The Tigers would have absolutely loved for one of their few home-grown products to prove MLB worthy at this point. However, Andy Oliver has tanked in...
Morosi: Cabrera proves me wrong
In March, I suggested in this space that Miguel Cabrera would have his worst season as a Tiger.
"I remember," Dave Dombrowski told me a few days ago.
Dombrowski, the Tigers' president and general manager, was standing in a Milwaukee hotel at baseball's executive meetings when I reminded him of my mid-spring prediction. He smiled.
You see, Miguel Cabrera did not...
O'Hara: Verlander is the AL MVP
On the day it was announced that he had won the American Leagues Cy Young Award, Justin Verlander told a funny story that described how his teammates regard him.
Miguel Cabrera, the Tigers lighthearted but heavy-hitting first baseman, romped through the clubhouse wearing a Superman cape.
Verlander, in Cabreras view, was baseballs version of Superman this season.
Verlander was...
2011 TigsTown Player Capsule: Brandon Inge
It was not a very good year for Brandon Inge, and every metric you examine just tells a story of how truly bad the season went for Inge. However, despite that, there's a good bet you'll see Inge in the lineup regularly next season.
Movember MLB Mustache Madness: Wild Card Semi-Finals - Bernie Brewer vs. Magglio Ordonez
In our final contest of the Movember MLB Mustache Madness regional semi-finals, the Wild Card bracket gives a pair of big fake artifical ones... mustaches I mean. What did you think I was talking about?
Bernie Brewer
Considering the great legacy of Brewer mustaches it is only fair that their mascot boast one of the best in the mascot business, but is it good enough to beat out...
Leyland harbors fondness for Tanner
The Detroit Tigers' postseason run ended with a loss to the Texas Rangers in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series, but that didn't stop manager Jim Leyland from watching every second of the World Series.
A pitcher as MVP? Tigers' Verlander has a case

Tigers sign C Laird to one-year contract
The Detroit Tigers signed catcher Gerald Laird to a one-year, $1 million contract on Friday.
Laird will play in his second stint with the club, having spent time with Detroit in the 2009-10 season prior to signing with the St. Louis Cardinals.
The 32-year-old batted .232 with one homer and 12 RBIs in 108 plate appearances this past season.

Laird returns to Tigers
Catcher Gerald Laird is returning to the Detroit Tigers, agreeing to a $1 million, one-year contract.
Laird hit .232 with one home run and 12 RBIs in 37 games last season for the World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals. The 32-year-old Laird has a .241 career average with 35 homers in nine major league seasons. He was with the Tigers from 2009-10 and also has played for Texas...
John’s Fake American League MVP Ballot
On Monday, the results of the American League MVP race will be revealed; here’s who I would put in my top-10:
10. Alex Avila, C – Detroit Tigers
Alex Avila’s line as a catcher in 2011 was incredible, hitting .295/.389/.506 with 33 doubles and 19 home runs. At just 24 years of age, Avila won his first silver slugger and could be in line for many to come.
9. Evan Longoria...
Gerald Laird is Back
The Tigers have made their first somewhat significant move of the off-season by signing catcher Gerald Laird to a one-year deal. Before you get too upset, keep in that he will probably be playing fewer than 40 games as Alex Avila's back-up catcher. The 32-year-old Laird needs no introduction to Tigers fans who remember him as a good field no hit catcher on the 2009-2010 teams...
Tigers make it official: Gerald Laird will be backup catcher
The Tigers this morning announced they have signed Gerald Laird to a one-year contract to serve as the backup catcher to Alex Avila.
