Brand new closer (we think) Sergio Santos took the ball with two on and one out in the ninth. His job was to protect a 3-2 lead over the New York Yankees. Just like the night before, he succeeded. Although this time, he wasn’t the one who turned in the impressive performance.
Instead, utility man Brent Lillibridge, a defensive substitution in right field, made two fantastic plays to send the White Sox home winners for the second consecutive night.
The first came on a hard line drive to the wall by Alex Rodriguez. Lillibridge trailed it back to the wall and caught it on a leap as his back crashed into the padding.
An even more impressive play followed. Robinson Cano hit a hard liner to right, Lillibridge charged in and — with his body fully extended — caught the ball to stop the threat. It was a tough daring move, as Rodriguez pointed out: “Very courageous dive, because if the ball tips off his glove, the game’s over.”
Well, the game was over. Just in the White Sox favor.
What did Ozzie Guillen think of the heroics? “I found my closer.” He told reporters after the game. “Lillibridge.”
