The Blue Jays have been absolutely ravaged with injuries this year having 8 of their pitchers go to the DL long term; including starters Brendan Morrow, Drew Hutchinson and Kyle Drabek and newly acquired closer Sergio Santos. They were barely treading above water staying in the playoff hunt due to their tremendous offense. Which suffered it’s biggest blow when MLB home run leader Jose Bautista went to the 15 day DL today after suffering a wrist injury in yesterday’s loss to the Yankees.

Today it was another one of their blossoming stars Brett Lawrie who suffered an injury which could have been a lot worse, and I mean a whole lot worse. Check out the spill he takes over the railings try to snag a foul ball:

Thankfully the injuries are not considered severe and Lawrie is listed as day to day with a bruised right calf. Given what could have happened based on the spill he took this is probably the best possible outcome.

First off all, look at where his foot hit near the camera, it could have easily hit it harder and caused his ankle or part of his leg to get broken. Then to have fallen down as soft as he did not landing on his head or arm is pretty remarkable.

A lof of credit should be given to Lawrie as I believe his athleticism allowed him to fall in a way that would limit the damage. He has terrific baseball instincts and was able to use them making a tough split second decision on where to hit the deck.

And please… don’t criticize him for going after a ball that was extremely difficult. That is his game, playing hard and going out on every single play. A mindset and attitude every professional athlete should have.

Get healthy soon Brett I look forward to you returning to the baseball field. If there is anybody that would have a speedy recovery from this situation it would be him. This man has to much determination to be kept out of the lineup long term after suffering a not so terrible injury after all.

Brett Lawrie Injures Leg Making Catch

Third Baseman Brett Lawrie’s reputation as a fearless baseball player was on display today against the host New York Yankees. Lawrie chased down a foul ball off the bat of Mark Teixiera down the third base line, and made a ridiculous attempt at catching the ball as it fell into a camera well. Lawrie was forced to leave the game with a bruised leg. According to the Blue Jays, Lawrie...

Welcome To The Bigs, Kid: Anthony Gose

On Monday Jose Bautista of the Toronto Blue Jays left the game after feeling pain in his wrist on an eighth-inning swing that produced a long foul ball. X-rays were negative but an MRI the following day revealed inflammation. At about the same time Anthony Gose a top prospect in the Blue Jays organization was playing for AAA Las Vegas. He was immediately pulled from the game...

Jays call up Gose instead of Snider to replace Bautista

Some thought Travis Snider, not Anthony Gose, would get the call up from Class AAA Las Vegas when the Toronto Blue Jays put Jose Bautista on the disabled list with a wrist injury. Among them was Gose himself. "I would have said Travis," Gose said Tuesday before Toronto's 6-1 loss to the New York Yankees. "He has been here, he has worked hard, he's had a...

Injury Plagued Toronto Blue Jays find pitching in Indy Leagues

It seems every Independent pitcher should have his eyes fixed on Toronto these days.  The Blue Jays have already purchased three major league-experienced hurlers in recent days to provide depth because of the decimation of its starting staff.            Besides Wichita’s Nate Robertson, the Jays have right-hander Chris Jakubauskas, who can start or relieve, and lefty...

Blue Jays' Bautista to remain on DL

Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista is not expected to return immediately when his time on the 15-day disabled list concludes Wednesday. He swung the bat Saturday for the first time since injuring his left wrist Bautista, who led the majors in home runs in both 2010 and 2011, was hurt in the eighth inning of a July 16 game at Yankee Stadium, grabbing his wrist in pain after hitting...

Yankee Stadium becomes Blue Jays' house of horror

Toronto Blue Jays manager John Farrell addressed the team before Monday's series opener with the Yankees about the trip to New York and Boston. "There's going to be steps along the way, and different sets of challenges that we'll meet, or we'll encounter," he said on Monday. "This road trip presents one of those, and I think this has a chance to further...

Post-hype Hope: Travis Snider

It wasn't long ago that Travis Snider was considered one of the top hitting prospects in all of baseball.  Hitting .248/.307/.423 in 877 plate appearances, as a corner outfielder that's not considered an asset defensively, isn't a good way to hold a starting job in the majors.  After losing a battle for the left field job in the spring, the Blue Jays organization decided...

Yankees 6, Blue Jays 1

Jose Bautista was worried his injury was worse. The star slugger landed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday but was relieved to learn there's no structural damage in his ailing left wrist. He thinks he could return to Toronto's lineup as soon as he's eligible, though manager John Farrell said it's too early to tell. ''The last thing that we want is to push...

Gose gets call up to Toronto

The first week of action following the MLB All-Star break has been unkind to players and fantasy owners. The Twitter-verse nearly reached its breaking point on Monday night, as three prominent sluggers sustained injuries. The losses of Jose Bautista, Joey Votto and David Ortiz (he was rounding the bases!) sent fantasy owners scrambling for replacements and cursing their impediments...
