TEAMS: Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates
MILWAUKEE - With free agent third baseman Aramis Ramirez set to join the Brewers, the team made space for him Monday by trading Casey McGehee to Pittsburgh for right-hander Jose Veras.
McGehee, 29, was named the Brewers' Most Valuable Player in 2010 after hitting .285 with 23 home runs and 104 RBI. He had a miserable season in 2011, though, hitting just .223 with 13 home runs and 67 RBI. He remained in the starting lineup through the end of the season but was replaced by Jerry Hairston, Jr. for the playoffs.
In Veras, the Brewers are getting much-needed help for their bullpen next season. The 31-year-old went 2-4 last year with a 3.80 ERA and one save in a career-high 79 appearances - the second-most of any NL reliever. In 71 innings of work, he gave up 54 hits while striking out 79.
Veras has a lifetime record of 14-13 in a six-year career that includes stops in New York (AL), Cleveland, Florida and Pittsburgh.
Both players are arbitration-eligible.

Casey McGehee's Rough Year
Casey McGehee is a Brewer. We have always hated Casey McGehee. Casey McGehee is a Pirate. We have always loved Casey McGehee. When the Pirates picked up Casey McGehee last night, my initial instinct was to remember that how awful he was in 2011 and how overrated I thought he was in 2010. Being overrated doesn't mean that a player isn't useful, of course (see: Neil Walker...
Brewers trade McGehee for Reliever Jose Veras
The Milwaukee Brewers have traded third baseman Casey McGehee to the Pittsburgh Pirates for reliever Jose Veras.
After the Brewers acquired Aramis Ramirez earlier today via free agency, a trade became more likely for McGehee. I personally thought there was no way the Brewers would deal McGehee because of his prolific 2010 season and that he would be able to platoon first base with...
Aramis Ramirez a sensible deal for Brewers
I'm late to the party on the Aramis Ramirez writing, but there's been some good stuff written about the move already. Jack Moore wrote the move up at FanGraphs, and sees it as an upgrade at third. Ryan Topp recapped it for Bernie's Crew, and doesn't like it nearly as much.My feelings fall somewhere in the middle. There's definite risk involved in forking over...
Agent: Brewers agree to deal with 3B Ramirez
The Milwaukee Brewers agreed to terms with free agent third baseman Aramis Ramirez on Monday, agent Paul Kinzer told The Associated Press.
Ramirez will provide a much-needed big bat for the Brewers, who are expected to lose first baseman Prince Fielder through free agency and may be without NL MVP Ryan Braun for the first 50 games of next season if he loses his appeal for testing...

Miller Park To Smell Like Stale Beer, Aramis
The Brewers signed Aramis Ramirez to a deal worth between $34-37 million. Wouldn’t you love to make so much money that there’s a gap of three million between what you might make? “Hey, Aramis, you got a second?” “I was just rolling up hundred dollar bills to make kindling.” “Just wanted to see if you’ll take a deal for somewhere...
