With Brewers starting pitcher Shaun Marcum sidelined, fellow starter Marco Estrada on his way back from injury and a struggling and overworked bullpen, Milwaukee made a minor move Friday to bolster its pitching staff. According FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Brewers will sign veteran pitcher Livan Hernandez. Hernandez was most recently a member of the Atlanta Braves, for whom he went 1-1 with a 4.94 ERA in 18 games this season. In his 17-year career, which spanned nine teams before signing with Milwaukee, Hernandez, 37, spent most of his time as a starting pitcher. He has a 175-177 career record and won at least 10 games in every season from 1998-2008. With young pitchers like Michael Fiers and Tyler Thornburg, who is back at Triple-A Nashville, available to start, the bullpen is the obvious destination for Hernandez, according to Rosenthal. The pitcher's arrival in Milwaukee was reported first via Twitter by former Brewers utilityman Bill Hall, who said Hernandez told him the news when the two ran into each other at the Chicago airport. Hall, however, said in the tweet that Hernandez was coming to Milwaukee to be in the rotation. "Just seen Livan Hernandez n the airport in Chicago," Hall said. "He's on his way 2 Milwaukee 2 help their starting rotation." Hernandez last spent time in a major league rotation with the Nationals last season. The 37-year-old was 8-13 with a 4.47 ERA in 29 starts in 2011. Follow Ryan Kartje on Twitter.
