The Pirates played an absolutely dreadful game on Sunday and dropped the rubber match with the Brewers 7-0.

Erik Bedard pitched well for the first few innings but got shelled for back-to-back three-spots in the fourth and fifth innings. Carlos Gomez hit a three-run homer after two 2-out singles to open the scoring, and Aramis Ramirez blasted one to center in the fifth. Bedard is now back in to a funk after showing some signs of encouragement a few weeks ago, and when he’s going badly, watching him pitch is downright painful.

The offense was just as bad. Some guy named Mark Rogers managed to allow just three hits through five despite needing over 100 pitches to do it (thanks to control issues). The Pirates had some chances to break through against him early on but weren’t able to come up with a big hit. They put a man on base in all nine innings, but obviously didn’t get anything going at all. Garrett Jones had the only extra base hit–a double–and Josh Harrison was the only Buc with two hits.

Stinkers like this will happen, but it’s extra-disappointing when it sews up a series loss against a losing team at home. The Pirates now trail St. Louis by 2 games again and will need to get their act together when the Cards come into town this week for an enormous series.
