Diagnosed with elbow tightness that caused him to miss his last scheduled start, Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Shaun Marcum was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday. The move is retroactive to June 15, which means Marcum will miss only one week's worth of action. To take his place on the active roster, first baseman Travis Ishikawa who had been on the 15-day DL with an oblique strain was reactivated. Brewers manager Ron Roenicke had hinted at the possibility of a trip to the disabled list for Marcum, noting that the Brewers could move up other pitchers' starts in order to skip Marcum for one turn without much backlash. Roenicke also said the team may make the move to get a fresh arm into the bullpen, but a nine-inning effort from starter Zack Greinke gave Milwaukee's middle relievers a day off on Friday night. Marcum's injury isn't expected to keep him out for very long, as he claimed in Milwaukee earlier this week that the elbow tightness was not serious. Marcum did, however, have Tommy John surgery in 2008, so any elbow problems he has are handled with care. The two issues are not believed to be related. Marcum had been one of the Brewers' most effective pitchers of late, remaining without a loss for the past month. Overall, Marcum is 5-3 with a 3.39 ERA in 13 starts this season.
