Brian McCann is still one of the best catchers in the game
Evan Gattis may be getting the lion’s share of the Atlanta Braves media attention, but veteran backstop Brian McCann is showing that he is still one of the best hitting catchers in the game.
Gattis had another stellar game when the Braves played against the Toronto Blue Jays Tuesday afternoon. He blasted his twelfth home run of the season, a solo shot, while playing the entire game behind the plate.
But McCann one-upped Gattis’ Tuesday afternoon.
McCann blistered two home runs against the Blue Jays, including the game winner in the tenth inning. That gives McCann 6 home runs on the season in only 57 at bats, which translates into 1 home run in every 9.5 at bats. That is even better than Gattis’ 1 homer in every 11.1 at bats.
McCann also leads Gattis in batting average (.281 to .271) on-base-percentage (.354 to .322) and RBI per at bat ( 4.07 to 4.16). The only major hitting stat that Gattis leads McCann, is slugging per...

Has B.J. Upton been benched? For the second game in a row and third in the past four, Braves center fielder B.J. Upton didn’t start. According to a report by AJC beat writer, Dave O’Brien, Upton is sitting out to work on his swing. Saturday night against the Mets, Jason Heyward started in center. Monday and Tuesday against the Blue Jays, Jordan Schafer started. Tuesday...
Here are three things we learned from the Braves' taxing 7-6 win over the Blue Jays, ensuring a split for the Toronto portion of this home-and-home, four-game series:
1. If only Brian McCann and Evan Gattis could alternate between catcher and DH every day
With elite reserves like Gattis, Jordan Schafer and Juan Francisco, the Braves' lineup has enough power, speed and...
Could Beachy return earlier than expected?
Braves starter Brandon Beachy, who is working his way back from Tommy Johnson surgery, was sharp in his second rehab start.
Beachy pitched 5 shutout innings for the Single-A Rome Braves, giving up no runs on three hits. He struck out three and walked only one.
Rome beat Charleston at State Mutal Stadium in Rome, 3-0, as Beachy got the...
The Toronto Blue Jays not only beat the Braves 3-0 Wednesday night. They delivered a knockout blow to Braves starter Kris Medlen in the second inning. With runners on second and third, Blue Jays’ second baseman Emilio Bonifacio hit a shot off Medlen’s right calf that he legged out for a hit. When play stopped, Medlen walked gingerly around the mound, and after the Braves...
ATLANTA The return of Jordan Walden gives the Braves' bullpen a much-needed boost, but not to the number of relievers available.
Atlanta activated the right-hander from the 15-day disabled list and optioned Cory Rasmus to Triple-A Gwinnett, keeping the bullpen at six men, but it's a scaled down approach that manager Fredi Gonzalez says he's comfortable with.

Brandon Beachy pitched better in his second rehab start. This time Beachy was pitching for Single-A Rome. Beachy tossed five scoreless innings on Wednesday allowing three hits and a walk. Beachy struck out one in the outing.
In Beachy’s first rehab outing with Gwinnett he allowed two hits, including a home run and walked three over four innings of work.
ATLANTA Laryngitis could not keep Kris Medlen off the mound Wednesday night. A hard-hit ball off the bat of Emilio Bonifacio could.
Medlen's string of tough luck at Turner Field this season continued as Bonafacio's hit struck him in the upper left calf in the second inning and, after finishing the Atlanta half of the frame, sent him to the trainer's room after it tightened...
ATLANTA The Atlanta Braves have activated right-hander Jordan Walden from the disabled list and optioned Cory Rasmus to Triple-A Gwinnett.
The Braves announced the move Wednesday before the start of a two-game home series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Walden was acquired from the Los Angeles Angels over the winter. He was 1-1 with a 4.85 ERA in 14 games before he went on the...
ATLANTA Barring one bad start against a hot Detroit Tigers offense, Mike Minor has been unrelenting this season consistent from start No. 1 to his last outing against the Mets in New York. He leads all Braves starters in wins above replacement (WAR, 1.2), strikeout-to-walk ratio and nearly every other statistical category one could think of.
With a 6-2 record, he's not only...
As if the Atlanta Braves needed more help right now. The team will see one of their young, stud pitchers make his 2013 debut in a little more than two weeks. Brandon Beachy, who has been battling his way back from Tommy John surgery, is slated for a June 18th return.
Carroll Rogers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution says Beachy is on target for June 18th as long as his...
Atlanta Braves starter Kris Medlen has left the game against the Toronto Blue Jays after taking a liner off his left leg.
Medlen was struck on the back of the leg, just below his knee, on a hard-hit ball by Emilio Bonifacio in the second inning Wednesday. He flexed the leg before deciding to stay in the game, but walked Munenori Kawasaki and surrendered a two-run single to Melky...

The Atlanta Braves do not expect starting pitcher Kris Medlen to miss his next start. Medlen was hit in the left leg by a comebacker in the second inning on Wednesday night against Toronto.
Medlen never returned to the mound in the third inning and the Braves declared the right hander out with a upper calf contusion.
Prior to exiting he allowed three runs on...
We've reached that point in the MLB season where you no longer need to use the "it's still early" caveat when talking about a struggling player. The first of June is upon us, and it's time to call a rose a rose, and a thorn a thorn.
The Atlanta Braves have several thorns right now, but none digging in quite as deep as the one standing in center field.

Justin Upton has really cooled off at the plate in May, batting .232/.360/.366 with just two home runs. B.J. Upton has found himself sitting on the bench lately, due to an unsightly batting average of .148 to along with 60 strikeouts already. Brian McCann has been a welcomed addition back to the team, cranking...
