Key Stats: Brian McCann has been the steady force at the catcher position over the last six years. He has finished with at least 20 home runs every season except one (he hit 18), he is a career .286 hitter, and has a career .844 OPS. He's also only going to be 28 this coming season. If you are going to go big early on catcher, it's nice that there's a consistent player in his prime available.Skeptics Say: While other sites project McCann closer to the top 50, that may be a stretch. Since 2006, McCann has never finished in the top 100 in Yahoo's player ranking formula. He's been good, but not spectacular. He's never finished with more than 24 home runs, never topped 100 RBI, and never topped 70 runs scored. Unlike many of the other top catchers he's competed with for fantasy supremecy, McCann doesn't find a way to crack the lineup when he isn't catching. Peer Comparison: Every site has Carlos Santana ranked ahead of McCann and one (CBS) even ha...

Q&A with Jair Jurrjens: Braves pitcher at '80 percent'

Jair Jurrjens appeared to be heading to his best season as a major leaguer in 2011. He was 12-3 with a NL-best 1.87 ERA and pitched 1-23 scoreless innings in the All-Star Game, but then his season fell apart. His surgically repaired right knee began bothering him and he won only one more game before the Braves shut him down for the final month. Jurrjens finished with a 13-6 record...

Buddy Carlyle? Really, Braves? Really?

There was an interesting piece of information passed along by David O’Brien from the Atlanta Journal Constitution on Twitter today. The Atlanta Braves have reunited with Buddy Carlyle on a minor league deal. He was seen today at the Braves’ 1st day of pitching camp. Braves fans may remember Carlyle from his stint with the team in 2007 through 2009. He pitched 191...

Kenshin Kawakami Going Home to Japan

The Atlanta Braves and Kenshin Kawakami‘s tumultuous relationship came to a conclusion after the 2011 season, when he became a free agent. Now, Kawakami is headed back to Japan to pitch for the Chunichi Dragons. The Braves signed Kawakami to a 3 year $23 million contract before the 2009 season. He really didn’t pitch poorly for the Braves. He was plagued by poor run...

Michael Bourn Player Projection No. 75

Key Stats: Michael Bourn has been one of the most consistent outfielders of the past three seasons and had been doing it under the radar - until last season that is. Heading into the 2011 season, Bourn was not ranked in the top 30 outfielders by ESPN, CBS, or Yahoo - despite being the only player to top 50 steals in both 2009 and 2010. Now Bourn is the only player in baseball that...

Beyond The Top 100: Scouting Sean Gilmartin

We recently released our annual top 100 prospects list here at Scout.com, and to follow that up we will be providing team quality first-hand scouting reports on select prospects from that list over the course of the off-season. We'll also be breaking down some of the prospects who narrowly missed making the list, like Atlanta Braves' prospect Sean Gilmartin.

Top 30 Braves Prospects: #30-21

Here's how this is going to work. Today, I'm going to count down from #30 to #21, then I'll be doing five players a day for every other day of the week. It was tough to get 30 due to the state of the system right now, but here's what we've got. Enjoy.30. Jean Carlos GilThe 21 year-old Gil made his American debut last summer in the GCL, where he struck out 63 and...

#54: How valuable is Craig Kimbrel?

There are two answers to this question: the short, quick answer and the long, detailed answer. The short answer is Kimbrel is a top-50 player and, arguably, a top-30 player. Last season his end-of-season rank was 19, which would seem to validate this conclusion. The long answer isn’t so cut and dry. While Kimbrel did rank 19th last season, you’ll be hard-pressed to...

Braves Caravan visits with high schoolers

The Braves Country Caravan, featuring Michael Bourn, Freddie Freeman and Eric O'Flaherty, bench coach Carlos Tosca, current Braves broadcaster and Hall of Fame pitcher Don Sutton and former Braves pitcher Greg McMichael, talked to a group of around 100 baseball and softball players from Mays, Therrell and South Atlanta high schools.

Heyward hopes hard work is rewarded

Much has happened from the time Jason Heyward reported for his second season at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex last February. The Braves outfielder understands that hard work is at the heart of a return to form.

Braves won't rush Hudson back to full strength

Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell is confident that both Jair Jurrjens and Tommy Hanson will be at full strength when Spring Training begins. But he is also approaching this year's camp with the understanding that Tim Hudson might be a little behind schedule.

Caravan gets Braves' 2012 off to a quality start

Through the Atlanta Braves Caravan, the team made a positive difference in the lives of some 200 youngsters on Saturday afternoon, when the Caravan kicked off its 2012 tour by making an appearance at the Jerry Clark Foundation's Fourth Annual Winter Baseball Camp.
