Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein says his twin brother finished running the Boston Marathon about 45 minutes before the two explosions near the finish line. Epstein spent nearly a decade as general manager of the Boston Red Sox. Earlier this week at Wrigley Field, he said his mother ran in the marathon ''at least a half-dozen times.'' Three people were killed and more than 180 were injured in Monday's bombings. The 39-year-old Epstein says he spoke to his brother, Paul, within 20 minutes of hearing about the explosions. ''You see the darkest side of humanity with someone wanting to harm innocent people,'' Epstein said. ''Then you see the best side of humanity, too, when you see people running toward an explosion like that to help out people who are in harm's way.''

Shawon Dunston Jr reached base four times on three singles and a walk, scored twice, and drove-in a run, Yasiel Balaguert singled twice, tripled, and knocked-in four runs, and Jacob Rogers smacked a two-run triple and walked, leading one squad of Cubs to a 7-3 victory over one squad of Diamondbacks on Field #3, and Francisco Sanchez hammered a two-run triple and then scored on...

The Ghosts of Free Agency Future

In the aftermath of the recently announced deal with the city to renovate Wrigley Field, Theo Epstein spoke to the media about its potential benefits to the team: Our payroll now is third in the division. That’s fine. But it should be first in the division. So this is one of the ways that we’re going to get there. It should be, we are on the same page. And this is one of the...

Cubs Progress Report 1

Now that the Cubs have completed 10% of their season (well, they've been rained out twice), I thought it'd be nice to give a review of how the Cubs have done so far this year. Javier Baez, SS, Chicago (NL) Baez, 20, hit .333 at the low-A ball level in 2012 but he did it while walking just nine times in 57 games. He then finished his injury-shortened season with another 23 games in high-A ball but struggled. His plate issues have continued into 2013 with 18 strikeouts and two walks in 58 at-bats. While his aggressive nature has not helped his batting average...

Bullpen continues to be Chicago Cubs biggest hurdle

It’s too early to worry.  It’s a long season.  They just have to find their bearings.  All excuses that beat around the bush of the terrible bullpen of the Chicago Cubs.  Through thirteen games, the Cubs relievers have blown four saves.  The bullpen’s collective ERA is 6.06 and collective WHIP of 1.54. Despite the Cubs [...]

Cubs 6, Rangers 2

Alfonso Soriano hit his first home run of the season, Anthony Rizzo also homered and the Chicago Cubs beat the Texas Rangers 6-2 Thursday at a soggy Wrigley Field. Despite torrential rains that caused citywide floods, the teams were able to play in an occasional drizzle. The Cubs and Texas were rained out Wednesday. Rizzo hit a two-run homer in the third inning and Soriano followed...

Chicago Cubs Claim Julio Borbon Off Waivers

MLB News: Julio Borbon was claimed off of the waiver wire by the Chicago Cubs from the Texas Rangers Friday. Spending his whole career in the Texas system, Borbon has a solid glove, but very little power and while he possesses very nice speed, his knowledge of the art of running has a few holes in it. There have been plenty of gems that were found on the waivers after being cast...

The One Where Ricketts Might Be Up to Something

Since taking over as owner of the Chicago Cubs in 2009, Tom Ricketts and his family have spoken at great lengths about how they are going to do whatever they could to bring the long coveted World Series Championship to the city of Chicago, and to the long suffering Cubs fans. In order to do this, he has needed the Cubs fans to buy into his plan, show some patience and let him and...
