This isn’t a hot-off-the-press kind of story but I didn’t notice it getting a ton of play in the mainstream sports media this week. Apparently, per USA Today, there is some disconnect between what the Nationals are expecting from Bryce Harper in his rehab stint and what Bryce Harper expects from the Nationals, let’s say in general. I’ve defended the Nats in their attempts to keep Stephen Strasburg from turning into the second coming of Mark Prior, even going so far as to believe that Jordan Zimmermann offered an easy-to-follow road map for the process. With that backdrop of coddling for their young pitchers it’s disconcerting to see the path the team is taking with Bryce Harper. Harper doesn’t think he’s ready for rehab and the team is telling him that, yes, Bryce, you are starting rehab right this instant! Given the relative paucity of awesome frontline starters in the world versus all other positions one could be forgiven for thinking that it makes more sense to coddle the young SP more than the young power hitting outfielder. I’m going to come right and say, though, that riding Harper too hard is the stupidest thing the Nationals could possibly do. [...]

Someone needs to get Jayson Werth a drink of water

The sun rises, the sun sets, and Jayson Werth suffers another injury due to...dehydration? Up above, Jayson Werth giving the cut sign to the Nats dugout after his base hit in the fourth inning. "I think it’s a situation where I’ve been kind of sick the last couple of days, haven’t really eaten a whole lot, probably pretty dehydrated." (Jayson Werth, via Washington...

Bryce Harper will begin rehab assignment with Class A Potomac on Tuesday

And so, after Davey Johnson and Bryce Harper famously differed in opinon on the timetable for Harper's first rehab start over the weekend, it seems Harper's take-it-slow stance has changed. Maybe Harper was inspired by the Bobblehead Day crowd? Regardless, he'll start Tuesday night for the P-Nats. Good for the P-Nats, who missed out on the Harper-Strasburg...

No Kidding. Strasburg: "I’m not a kid anymore."

"I’m not a kid anymore. ...You know, I should be allowed to stretch a little bit out there… No big deal. Obviously he cares about me and wants everything to be OK, but there was nothing to be worried about." Washington Nationals: Bryce Harper to begin rehab in Potomac on Tuesday

Good news for Washington Nationals fans everywhere, Bryce Harper is starting his comeback. Starting Tuesday, Harper will begin rehab at Class A Potomac. This is early even in Harper’s opinion. Nationals' Jayson Werth groin injury could linger

Washington Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth recently returned from a hamstring injury, and he's now hampered by a groin ailment. The slugger expects to rejoin the Nationals' lineup tomorrow, but Sports Chiropractor Dr. Ray Solano cautions that the injuries could linger and require another stint on the disabled list if not treated properly. Jayson Werth is hoping to...

Nationals rumors: Washington could seek rotation upgrade

Entering the season, it would have seemed foolish to suggest the Washington Nationals would eventually be in the market for rotation assistance this summer. Impressive young arms Jordan Zimmermann, Stephen Strasburg and Ross Detwiler and Cy Young Award-candidate Gio Gonzalez were joined by former ace Dan Haren. However, following Haren's move to the disabled list, the Nationals...

Strasburg, Nationals beat Rockies 2-1

Once again, the Nationals struggled for runs when Stephen Strasburg was on the mound. With the right-hander dominating against the slumping Rockies, two was enough. Strasburg struck out nine over seven innings, Ian Desmond homered in his third straight game to help give the righty his first win in June and Washington beat Colorado 2-1 on Friday night. ''He threw great...

Haren rocked again, Nats fall 7-1 to Rockies

Dan Haren has shown no signs of turning around a season-long slump. The right-hander allowed six runs over 3 1-3 innings with seven hits including his 19th home run surrendered and an RBI single to opposing starter Jhoulys Chacin, who pitched seven shutout innings as the Washington Nationals fell to the Colorado Rockies 7-1 on Saturday afternoon. ''Same thing that's...

Your Saturday Baseball Open Thread

Happy Saturday and welcome to the best day of the week to be a baseball fan. Diamondbacks-Nationals Preview

Though his win-loss record doesn't show it, Gio Gonzalez has been one of the hottest pitchers in baseball for the past six weeks. The Washington Nationals hope to provide enough run support for Gonzalez to earn his first victory in that span as they host the NL West-leading Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night. Gonzalez (3-3, 3.34 ERA) has a 2.18 ERA over his last eight starts...

Dugout Digest - don't call it a comeback

Remember the Washington Nationals, chic preseason World Series pick? Well, the Nationals have scuffled thusfar this season, but lately, they're showing signs of putting it all together. Washington has won three in a row, and knocked off the Rockies 2-1 last night in a vintage performance from Stephen Strasburg (and an all too common performance from their offense this season...

Nats Wrangle Winning Streak With Win Over Rockies

Stephen Strasburg was key to the Nationals’ victory, as he kept the game close for seven innings, allowing only one run on five hits...
