Bryce Harper has had a pretty decent start to his MLB career. Through 11 games, he’s hitting just .263, but he’s getting on base at a 37% clipand six of his ten hits have gone for extra bases. He’s shown his absolute hose in the outfield and his ability to take an extra base when the opportunity presents itself. But the thing that has impressed most people has been Harper’s willingness to go all out.

In his first Major League at bat, he hit a comebacker to Dodgers pitcher Chad Billingsley. Instead of loafing it to first like 98% of Major Leaguers would, Harper high-tailed it, forcing Billingsley to make an accurate, timely throw. Harper’s aggressive has turned out to be a small issue for the Nationals however. According to Nats’ skipper Davey Johnson, Harper hurt teammate Mark DeRosa with a power high-five.

Per Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post:

DeRosa’s progress returning from a strained left oblique muscle was stunted in an odd way, Johnson said. As Bryce Harper came into the dugout Sunday night after he stole home against the Phillies, DeRosa aggravated his oblique when Harper gave him a forceful high-five.

“I don’t know if that set back the rehab or not,” Johnson said. “But I said, ‘Why didn’t use your [right] hand?’ He said it was spur of the moment.”

Harper might need to join Braves outfielder Michael Bourn in High Five 101. Power high fives have their place and time, but Harper should consider using them on teammates that haven’t spent much of the past couple seasons on the disabled list. DeRosa might appreciate a nice soft pat on the butt next time.
