Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz, who has been out since June 8 with a strained shoulder, is finally set to throw a pitch in a real game.
Barring an unforeseen sharknado, Buchholz will take the mound for the Single-A Lowell Spinners this afternoon. He's slated to throw between 45 and 50 pitches.
You don't want him to overdo it.
Ian Browne of MLB.com reports that Buchholz could return to the Boston rotation after two or three minor-league starts. In either case, don't expect Buchholz back until September 8 at the earliest.
This season, Buchholz is 9-0 with a 1.71 ERA in just 84 1/3 innings.
Having a healthy and productive Buchholz would certainly help the Sox as they prepare for the stretch run and hopefully the playoffs.
That is, if the Red Sox make it.
