The Bucs made yet another move tonight – this time a trade with the Kansas City Royals. They sent Brooks Pounders and Diego Goris to Kansas City in exchange for Yamaico Navarro.

Navarro, 24, will likely assume the role of utility infielder in 2012 (and could play some third if Pedro Alvarez continues to struggle). He hasn’t hit much in 112 big league plate appearances, but is regarded as a pretty decent prospect with some upside. He can play short, third, second, and outfield. He’s certainly an upgrade over Pedro Ciriaco (who was just DFA’d) and is probably just as (or possibly more) promising than Chase d’Arnaud or Jordy Mercer at this point.

It’s interesting that the Pirates gave up Pounders, who was a 2009 second round pick. He has progressed well enough, and had an especially strong 2011 season in West Virginia – but is already being used as a reliever. The Bucs have a ton of guys like Pounders at the WV/State College level, so losing him hopefully won’t be a big deal. Goris is a throw in – he’s coming off his fourth season in the Dominican League.
