According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets are looking into trading for starting pitcher Gil Meche.

The Mets will have their feelers out for John Lackey , who the Mets think would be a ideal number two behind Johan Santana. The Mets do NOT want to give Lackey more than 4 years. Someone will probably break that barrier, so the Mets are looking into other options.

Omar Minaya and Royals GM Dayton Moore spoke several times before these meetings, and plan to expand on talks here. The Mets had no interest in a Luis Castillo-Jose Guillen trade with the Royals.

He has two years at $24 million left on his contract at a time when the Royals are looking to trim payroll. The Mets might explore the possibility of moving Castillo as part of a Meche deal, possibly by taking another bad contract, such as those belonging to relievers Kyle Farnsworth ($4.25 million) or Juan Cruz ($3.75 million).

What worries the Mets from making a deal to get Meche is the uncertainty of what type of performance he will give in the big city. The Mets already have Pelfrey, Perez, and Maine who are all up in the air in terms what kind of season they will have. The Mets also express interest in lower level free agents like Wolf, Garland, Pineiro, Marquis, and Davis to fill holes in rotation.

The Mets who recently signed Henry Blanco to back up, will look at Bengie Molina to guide this pitching staff. One of the major problems last year was the critic that the Mets catchers (Schneider/ Santos) could not call a good game. They will look for someone like Molina to do so.
