Following the surprising and very upsetting news of Charlie Morton‘s Tommy John surgery, the Bucs could have used a nice lift from Erik Bedard and company tonight in Baltimore. They didn’t get it, and were blown out to complete a really awful series.

Bedard was bad from the start in his former home ballpark. The O’s struck for four runs in the first inning…the dagger being a two-run double by good old Steve Pearce. Another former Pirate strikes again. Unbelievable. Pearce later homered and collected 5 RBI’s on the night. Bedard, meanwhile, had his worst start of the season: 3.1 innings, 7 runs, 8 hits, 2 walks, 1 K. Ouch.

The Bucs never had much of a chance after being put into such a giant hole, but the offense showed no signs of life early on against the mediocre Tommy Hunter (who was perfect through 4).  Rod Barajas hit a three-run homer in the fifth, but by that point it only reduced a 10-0 lead to 10-3. The Bucs picked up two more in the sixth (one on a Pedro Alvarez RBI single) and another in the ninth. In the end they posted six runs and ten hits, but they all came in garbage time.

Doug Slaten compounded Bedard’s terrible outing with three more runs allowed in less than an inning, and Jared Hughes and Chris Resop each allowed a run while eating up the rest of the necessary outs.

Brutal game, brutal series, brutal day. There’s not a whole lot I can really say other than that it sucked. The Pirates are still two games over .500 and the Orioles have been playing well, so don’t hit the panic button yet…but a big-time bounceback series in Cleveland (or at least Friday night with J-Mac on the hill) would be much appreciated.

Orioles 12, Pirates 6 / Box / 2012 Record: 32-30 / Next: Friday, at Indians, 7:05

MVP: Alvarez/Hughes (-.001) / LVP: Bedard (-.309) / Key play: Pearce’s double
