KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Detroit Tigers star Miguel Cabrera has been given medical clearance to play again.
The third baseman has been out since being hit in the face by a bad-hop grounder on March 19. The ball broke a bone below Cabrera's right eye and caused a gash that needed eight stitches.
The Tigers say Cabrera was examined Tuesday and cleared to resume his spring training activity. Cabrera is expected to return to the lineup within a couple of days, although manager Jim Leyland hasn't said exactly when he'll play.
Detroit opens the season on April 5 at home against Boston.
Cabrera led the majors last year with a .344 batting average. He also hit 30 home runs and had 105 RBIs for the AL Central champions.

We can all agree that the t-shirt pictured above has to be one of the best Jim Leyland t-shirts we’ve ever seen. Not that we’ve seen many Jim Leyland t-shirts, but we’ll go out on a limb and say you just can’t get much better than that. But unfortunately, the Detroit Tigers don’t want you to be able to purchase one of the best Jim Leyland t-shirts we’ve ever seen. Jim Leyland's style and personality seems to fit the city of Detroit quite well. Some people love Leyland for bringing the Detroit Tigers from the abyss into one of the top teams in the American League.
The Dirty Trick bar in Detroit also thinks so highly of Leyland that they've started selling a t-shirt of Leyland's mug with a cigarette dangling out the side of his...
The Detroit Tigers have optioned right-hander Jacob Turner to Triple-A Toledo, one of six roster cuts Monday.
Detroit also reassigned right-hander Chris Bootcheck to minor league camp, along with infielders Audy Ciriaco, Argenis Diaz and Ryan Strieby and outfielder Quintin Berry.
Turner is considered by many to be Detroit's top prospect and was in the running to become the...
It wasn’t an official announcement, but Magglio Ordonez is probably close to having a press release of some sort to announce his retirement from baseball, as it is becoming more and more unlikely that the Tigers, or any team for that matter, will opt not sign him to a Major League deal. He has already gone on record as saying he will not accept a minor league contract. Ordonez...
Over my, now nearly, 27 years on this planet it seems as though I have heard every cliché in the sports book. I know that the season is a marathon and not a sprint and I’ve heard all about how we lost this game as a team. My absolute favorite is how that one player on the opposing team is the proverbial “Tiger Killer”. Jim Thome has held this distinction for a number of years...
The Tigers’ 14-4 spring training record is one of the best in the majors, and one of the best in recent Tigers history. They haven’t lost back to back games all spring. Largely inconsequential, yes; but it’s better than 4-14.
Spring Training stats are generally poor performance predictors, but let’s see if a deeper look can reveal anything.

What began as five pontential candidates for the Detroit Tigers’ fifth spot, has dwelded down to three. With less than two weeks left of Spring Training, manager, Jim Leyland isn’t saying who is favored to take the role of fifth starter.
One thing we do know is who is still in the running: Drew Smyly, Andy Oliver, and Duane Below.
Andy Oliver: Oliver came out of the gate strong...
Jim Leyland is never one without his cigarettes, well that was until Wayne County banned smoking indoors, which included his office and the Detroit Tiger’s clubhouse. A local bar in Detroit honored the grizzly-voiced manager and his passion for cancer sticks with this awesome T-shirt

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) -- Rick Porcello pitched seven strong innings and Mark Buehrle was solid for six Monday as the Detroit Tigers and Miami Marlins played to a 3-all tie.
The game was stopped after 10 innings. It was Detroit's fifth tie this spring.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) -- Austin Jackson hit an inside-the-park home run and Brennan Boesch also homered for the Detroit Tigers before the Houston Astros rallied for a 14-7 win Tuesday.
Both Detroit homers came off Houston starter Wandy Rodriguez, who gave up five runs in six innings.
Brian Bogusevic hit a two-run homer and a double for the Astros. Jose Altuve had three hits and...
