Zoinks! There’s news out of the Huffington Post this morning that San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain—who is eligible to become a free agent after this season—has put his Bay Area home up for sale.

Unless Cain and his family are just looking to upgrade (after all, he is getting quite the pay hike in the final year of his contract), this could very well be reason for concern if you’re a Giants fan.

The team is reportedly working on an extension to keep Cain in San Francisco beyond 2012, but as recently as Friday, the right-hander said he was “excited” about the possibility of free agency.

Many Yankees fans and bloggers still think Shotgun will end up in pinstripes next year.

Cain went 12-11 with a 2.88 ERA, 1.083 WHIP, 7.3 SO/9 rate and 2.6 BB/9 rate in 2011. In seven seasons with the Giants, he has a losing record of 69-73.

His home, located in sunny Noe Valley, is currently listed at $1.795 million dollars and, according to real estate site Socketsite, it’s selling for over $250,000 less than what Cain bought it for in 2008.

Yes, the housing market is still down, but Cain had the place thoroughly remodeled after he bought it. He shouldn’t be taking a loss on it. (Although taking a loss might just be in his DNA.)

It’s not the first time Cain has put the modest 2,815-square foot home on the market.

Shortly after the Giants’ 2011 season ended without a playoff appearance—due mostly in part to an anemic offense that finished last in nearly every batting category—Cain put his crib up for sale for $1.95 million dollars. At the time, the September 2011 listing said the sellers were “motivated” to move.

As for the house itself, located at 1901 Diamond Heights, it’s nowhere near the luxury level of Pat Burrell‘s swanky love shack (which we showed you last week). Still, Cain’s is a pretty sweet pad. It’s got a solarium, top-of-the-line appliances, and sweet views of The City. You can check out more pictures of Cain’s house here.

Well, what do you think, Giants fans? Is the writing on the wall? Is Cain a goner?
