Even though catcher Salvador Perez played in just 39 games for the Royals last season, baseball people and baseball fans quickly began to run out of ways to adequately describe the 21-year-old's talent.
Perez was called a "natural," or a "freak of nature," and quite simply the "best catching prospect the Royals have ever had."
Perez's unique blend of soft hands, a laser arm and an uncanny fearlessness behind the plate even had Royals skipper Ned Yost in awe.
"I've been in this game a long time," Yost said last fall. "I've seen hundreds of catchers come through and I've never seen one like him. He's a very, very rare find."
Perez, 6-foot-3, 244 pounds, burst on the scene last season and immediately wowed all observers, most of whom already had been briefed on his amazing defensive skills.
But what further impressed long-time baseball people such as Yost was that Perez proceeded to hit .331 with eight doubles, two triples and three homers.
