There’s nothing like a trip to Denver to get a batter out of a slump. Ruben Tejada headed into a three-game set against the Rockies in the midst of a 6-37 slump with 11 strikeouts. But the thin air and the Rockies’ pitching staff helped him to a 10-16 series and now after 21 games, Tejada has a .770 OPS, the 10th-best mark among MLB shortstops. Many people figured the Mets were doomed when they lost Jose Reyes to free agency. Clearly that’s not been true, as the team is 13-9 and would claim the second Wild Card if the season ended Sunday. Additionally, Tejada has been better than Reyes so far here in the early going. Reyes has a .596 OPS and a -0.4 fWAR while Tejada has a 0.6 fWAR. A few people even suggested that the Mets should chase Jimmy Rollins if they lost Reyes to free agency. The Phillies shortstop, who signed a 3-year, $33 million contract with a vesting option for a fourth season, has been even worse than Reyes so far in 2012. He has a .524 OPS. So, Mets fans did...

Is Chris Schwinden a long-term solution for the rotation?

Chris Schwinden made his 2012 MLB debut this past Friday.  With <a href=”http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pelfrmi01.shtml”>Mike Pelfrey being shelved for the year… it’s likely to not be Schwinden’s last start with the big ballclub.  The question that Met fans are puzzling is, “Can our team win with this guy on the mound?” The answer is difficult...

Mets wore cowboy outfits for their road trip to Houston (Pictures)

The Mets completed a series in Colorado over the weekend and decided to dress up with a Western theme for their flight to Houston. The players wore cowboy outfits, and pitcher R.A. Dickey seemed to have the best time of all. Dressed as a sheriff, he shared the pictures you see above on his Twitter account. On the left he’s with the outlaw Johan Santana, and on the right he...

Torres Back, Duda Out, Dickey and the Mets Lift-Off In Houston

Mets Notes The Mets have activated OF Andres Torres from the 15-day disabled list and optioned Zach Lutz back to Triple-A Buffalo. Lucas Duda is out of Monday’s lineup with a suspected case of the flu, the right fielder said. Mike Baxter instead is playing right field. The Mets are 13-9 as they enter the final day of April. Johan sharp, bullpen not, but Mets earn hard fought series win over Rox

New York Mets ace Johan Santana cruised through six scoreless innings in this afternoon’s rubber match game against the Colorado Rockies, but despite allowing just two hits while striking out five, the lefty was unable to pick up his first win of the 2012 season. With the Mets up by four in the 8th inning, the typically reliable tandem of Jon Rauch and Tim Byrdak were knocked...

Old Time Mets: LHP Jon Matlack

Jon Matlack’s career record of 125-126 may be as mediocre as you can get, but Matlack was a much, much better than average major league pitcher. In fact, he was one of the very finest lefthanded pitchers ever developed by the Mets’ organization. His other career marks – 3.18 lifetime ERA (better than Steve Carlton, who was considered the best lefty of his generation), 97 complete...

Post Game: Lead, Tie, Lead, Tie, WIN!

Ike Davis is beginning to show signs of life again, and for opposing teams...that's not good.   The New York Mets held a 4-0 lead heading to the bottom of the eighth, but a grand slam from the Rockies tied the game sending it to extras two innings later. The Mets got a one run lead once again, but another homerun tied it for the second time. New York got the lead back in the...

Buffalo Bisons (13-10, 2 GB) -The Bisons are one of only five teams in the entire International League with at least 13 wins, unfortunately for them two others are in the same division with league leading Pawtucket and Lehigh Valley. Recently they are winners of their last three straight games and winners of four of their last five. Yesterday they had a walk-off 4-3 victory over...

Poll: What are realistic expectations for this year’s Mets team?

Before I get to the poll, I want to give you some background information to explain why I’m asking this question. I just had a debate on Facebook with a couple of guys about the Mets. The debate started with a pessimistic Mets fan named Jesse posting a sarcastic status update: “[The Mets] lost to the astros…..yea we are a good team” Jesse also told me: “Be a realistic...

Mets-Astros Preview

The New York Mets and Houston Astros were expected to be among the worst teams in the NL this season. So far, David Wright and the Mets are among the best. Wright and the Mets will try to conclude an impressive month on a positive note Monday night in the opener of a three-game road set against the Astros. New York (13-9) and Houston (8-14) both finished well out of playoff contention...
