J.A. Happ altered the course of the Yankees’ season back in February breaking Curtis Granderson’s forearm in the second game of spring training. Tuesday night the Blue Jays’ lefthander nearly destroyed what was left of the Bombers’ postseason hopes. Happ drilled Robinson Cano on the left hand in the first inning of the Yankees’ 7-1 win over the Blue Jays sending the Bombers’ best player to the hospital for X-rays. The Yankees finally caught a break in this injury-riddled season as the X-ray came back negative leaving Cano day-to-day. Only six days ago the Yankees lost Jayson Nix to a season-ending broken hand after he was hit by Toronto’s R.A. Dickey in a similar spot. No Blue Jays hitter was hit in return but Alfonso Soriano exacted some revenge on Happ by drilling his next pitch for a three-run homer. Soriano belted two long balls in the game recording his 400th career home run in the third inning. Mark Reynolds and Alex Rodriguez added homers as the Yankees scored seven runs matching their total from the past three games combined. Andy Pettitte didn’t need as much run support as he received throwing seven shutout innings to win his third straight start. It marked Pettitte’s first scoreless outing of the season lifting him to 10-9. The Yankees had another injury scare later in the game as Eduardo Nunez – who had taken over for Cano in the bottom of the first – fell to the turf as he moved toward second base on Jose Reyes’ eighth-inning single. Nunez looked to be in tremendous pain with an apparent leg injury. He was tended to by team trainer Steve Donohue convincing both Donohue and Joe Girardi that he could remain in the game. Nunez had a hit in the ninth but was removed for a pinch-runner. The Yankees got off to a quick start as Brett Gardner led off the first with a double scoring on Derek Jeter’s single for a 1-0 lead. That’s when Cano took a 90 mph fastball off the side of his left hand a pitch that left the Yankees’ second baseman in considerable pain. Cano grimaced as Donohue came out to look at the hand but Cano remained in the game – at least temporarily.
