St. Louis Cardinals pitching prospect Joe Kelly will be promoted this weekend from Class AAA Memphis to start in place of injured starter Jaime Garcia on Sunday, the club confirmed Friday. Kelly, a right-hander, will make his major league debut at home against the Cleveland Indians. A spot on the 40-man roster will also be cleared for Kelly. Kelly, who turns 24 on Saturday, is 2-5 at Memphis with a 2.86 ERA, which is second in the Pacific Coast League. It is not known if a pitcher would be sent down on Sunday to make room for Kelly on the active 25-man roster. If not, the Cardinals would have 13 pitchers for the first time this season.

Pitch six or more innings and give up fewer than 3 runs. It’s called a quality start. That has been a rare sight recently for St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny and the bullpen is having to work overtime and not being paid time and a half for it. But, for some reason, the starting [...]
