ST. LOUIS On the day that Albert Pujols was officially introduced as an Anaheim Angel at a large pep rally outside Angels Stadium, his former team was moving on. The Cardinals and free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal moved closer to completing an agreement on a two-year contract Saturday worth a reported 14 million, a source confirmed to FOXSportsMidwest.com. The often-injured Furcal was on the disabled list twice last season with the Dodgers but joined the Cardinals at the trade deadline and hit .255 in 50 games and helped them rally to win the National League Wild Card. But Furcal, who started the "happy flight" chant that become popular with the Cardinals down the stretch, hit just .194 (15-for-77) in the playoffs. The return of Furcal means less playing time for Tyler Greene, who was in line to be the starter at shortstop. The Cardinals could platoon Greene at second base with Dan Descalso and Skip Schumaker or they could look to trade him. Furcal was the National League Rookie of the Year in 2000 with the Braves and made the All-Star team in both 2003 and 2010. Hes an above-average defender and has stolen at least 20 bases in nine different seasons. The 34-year-old Furcal has been to the playoffs in nine of his 12 big league seasons.

Man sticks wad of gum on Albert Pujols statue

Bra-freaking-vo. That, folks, is some serious comeuppance. The photo, courtesy of @Matt Sebek (by way of The Sports Hernia Blog). Sebek is understandably irate over Pujols signing with Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and chose to express his frustrations by a little bit of subtle statue-defacing. I wholeheartedly applause his actions. He tweets: How about [...]

Death, Taxes — and Pujols

When he accepted a 10-year, $254 million offer from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim last week, free-agent first baseman Albert Pujols ended a tremendous chapter in his baseball career. He also joined a team in California — the state with the highest tax rate in Major League Baseball. Various sources have noted that Pujols’ decision to sign with the Angels, over the St....

View from St. Louis: Cardinals got Albert Pujols' best years

Pujols had a chance to go down as a St. Louis immortal, alongside Musial and Gibson, but he went for the money. His decline will be the Angels' problem.ST. LOUIS — Albert Pujols is an Angel now, and it doesn't make him the devil. Sorry, but I don't have it in me to rage and rant against Pujols, the Angels or the Cardinals.

Angels shift power balance in AL

Well, that didn't last long, did it? Cardinals fans barely had a month to enjoy their world championship before the euphoria came to an abrupt end. Tony La Russa's surprise retirement was one thing, but Albert Pujols' stunning defection to the Angels underscored how fleeting baseball's prosperity can be. Just like that, the Cardinals are down, and for now, so are...

Winter Meetings Review: St. Louis Cardinals

It’s a popular sentiment these days to consider the Cardinals one of the losers of the Winter Meetings. Their franchise player left town and people are still talking. In the end, Albert Pujols’ departure doesn’t rate with Lebron James in terms of raw emotion, but many Cardinals fans have an empty feeling these days. Others are vowing to burn their Pujols jerseys...

And the winners are ... the Angels and Marlins

This is asking a lot, but forget about Albert Pujols. The Los Angeles Angels finished second to the Texas Rangers in the American League West a year ago on the strength of one of the best 1-2-3 starting pitching trios in the majors. Jered Weaver would have been a Cy Young Award winner most years, and Dan Haren and Ervin Santana provided strong support.

Former Met roars at winter meeting for L.A.

The man who helped rock baseball’s winter meetings by making Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson Angels grew up in New Jersey poring over the Baseball Encyclopedia and Bill James’ Baseball Abstract and can still recall details from prep games pitched by perhaps the biggest Jersey Shore schoolboy star ever, Al Leiter.
