He struck out three and gave up three hits, while throwing 41 pitches with Double-A Springfield. #489893831 / gettyimages.com"Well obviously the second inning went a little cleaner than the first. I felt fine in the first inning too. Not really any difference in the innings just a little better luck. Even in spring training you got to start somewhere, you got to build up. For me the next time out I got to being a little bit better, a little bit stronger and the ability to go a little bit longer," said Tyler Lyons to Megan Rice of Ozarks First. This season, Lyons has an ERA of 6.12 in 25 innings pitched while starting 4 games. He has 23 struck outs, 7 walks, and has given four home runs. The 26-year old has just one year of expierence where he started 8 games. In 2013, Lyons had an ERA of 4.75 in his rookie season while walking 16 and striking out 43 in 53 innings pitched. He had a WHIP of 1.23 while helping the Cardinals reach the World Series. He will likely be back by next week and could placed in the bullpen if they want to keep their rotation in tack.#483325179 / gettyimages.comKolten Wong took swings Sunday for the first time this past weekend while feeling no pain in his tender left shoulder. Mike Matheny said Wong could have played Sunday, but they decided to give him four days of rest. What are the Cardinals' needs as we get ready for trading season?

With the MLB first year player draft out of the way, the focus now shifts to the next big event, the July 31st (waiver-free) trade deadline.  The Cardinals have been scuffling all year and could certainly use some help, but what exactly are their needs as the deadline approaches?BullpenThe top priority for John Mozeliak should be to find bullpen help.  The Cardinals bullpen has...

Oscar Taveras: A look behind the numbers through 9 games

Oscar Taveras has played a whole 9 games and stepped to the plate 36 times for the St. Louis Cardinals.  In the new world of social media, he has brought with him the honor of being the most hyped prospect in team history.  And now, we’ll do a quick, way too early, dive into what we’re seeing. On the surface, the slash line of .212/.250/.333 reflects a slow start.  With such...

How The Cardinals Spent Their Canadian Vacation

At times, you’d think baseball is a contrary child.  Just when you have it all figured out, just when you know what’s going to happen, baseball goes and takes a sharp turn to throw you off. Going into this weekend, the numbers looked dismal for the St. Louis Cardinals.  Their offense was sputtering and their pitching, while fairly good overall, had hit some rough patches.  They...

MRI results on Wainwright's elbow come back in the Cardinals' favor

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Don't be too worried about the state of Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright's right elbow just yet. Manager Mike Matheny said an MRI on Wednesday showed no damage to the elbow ligament that Wainwright had surgically replaced in February 2011, a result that had to ease the worries of Matheny and the Cardinals. Asked about his level of concern, Matheny said...

Adam Wainwright outduels Jake Odorozzi as Cardinals edge Rays for third consecutive shutout

Coming into tonight’s game in Tampa, Cardinals’ pitchers haven’t allowed a run in 18 innings and the Rays have been scoreless through 19 innings. It didn’t get easier for the Rays as they had to face Cardinals’ ace Adam Wainwright. As a result, those scoreless steaks continued. Though Wainwright had to outduel his counterpart, Rays’ starter Jake Odorizzi. Making his start...

Adam Wainwright Is Nonsensical Right Now

Believe it or not, that wasn’t a great Adam Wainwright performance. Correct, a 7 inning, 0 run, win wasn’t a great Adam Wainwright performance. Not a typo. I mean, if you were another pitcher, sure, your agent would be filing this one away for contract talks. But this wasn’t another pitcher. This was THE pitcher. Wainwright only struck out 2, walked 2 and got tagged with 7...

Trevor Rosenthal Bodies A Poor Ball Boy To Make Play On Foul Ball

We’ve seen many times in the past that foul territory bullpens provide the opportunity for the opposing team’s relief pitchers to mess with ball boys, an under-appreciated pastime that Trevor Rosenthal is apparently quite good at. The Cardinals closer denied a Rays’ ball boy the chance to make a play on a rolling foul last night by bodying him out of the way and making the...

Cardinals make the most out of Holliday's moonshot against the Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Matt Holliday hasn't hit many homers lately but when he has, they have been no-doubters. The one he slugged Tuesday night was pretty important, too. As in, Cardinals 1, Rays 0. Holliday produced the game's only run in the fifth inning when, with two strikes and two outs in the sixth, he connected with a splitter that didn't split that he launched...

Cardinals to present Jon Hamm Night at Busch Stadium

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- George Wendt sported a St. Louis Cardinals cap in "Dreamscape." Steven Guttenberg wore a Cardinals jersey in "Police Academy." But when it comes to Hollywood star power, no one sells the Cardinals like Jon Hamm. Hamm, star of television's "Mad Men" and a St. Louis native who often can be spotted wearing Cardinals apparel, will be...

Wainwright wins ninth, Cards beat Rays 1-0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Adam Wainwright became the NL's first nine-game winner, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat Tampa Bay 1-0 on Tuesday night, the Rays' third straight shutout loss. The Cardinals have three consecutive shutouts for the first time since April 2013. St. Louis, with 13 shutouts this season, was coming off 5-0 victories over Toronto on Saturday and Sunday....

Vaughn Bryan lifts Peoria to an 8-4 win; Palm Beach seems to forget how to lose

Memphis lost a close one in extras, Springfield saw Kyle Hald garner his sixth win, Palm Beach continues to roll with their seventh straight win, and Peoria got a three-RBI performance from prospect Vaughn Bryan.   Tacoma 3 Memphis 2   Game Highlights Greg Garcia led off the bottom of the first with a solo homer over the left field wall to start off the scoring in the opening game...

His sterling stats don't show it, but Waino is getting by with a lot of so-so stuff

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- What is most remarkable about Adam Wainwright's first half is not that he has pitched at least seven shutout innings in half of his 14 starts. Nor is it that on Tuesday night he became the first NL pitcher to win nine games and the first in the majors to pass 100 innings, making him a leading contender to start the All-Star Game for the first time. Nor...

Cards throw third straight shutout

There were moments Tuesday during his seven shutout innings that Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright had been abandoned by his fastball, couldn’t find the same snap to his curve, and just had to improvise a pitch on the spot to tame an inning. Several times after the game Wainwright described his urgency to somehow, some way “find ways to get outs.” Manager Mike Matheny can empathize...

St. Louis Cardinals To Host ‘Jon Hamm Night,’ Give Out Bobbleheads (Photo)

Bobblehead nights are all the rage in the MLB. They attract huge crowds, and the big-headed statues — usually of beloved players or managers — often become collectors’ items. But the St. Louis Cardinals are hosting a bobblehead night that’s a little different than what we’re used to. August 18 will be “Jon Hamm Night” at Busch Stadium. The Mad Men star is a St. Louis...

Cards Complete Successful Series In Toronto

Sunday was a plus win for the Cardinals. It pushed them 2 games over .500 instead of right at .500. It leveled their road record at 17-17. And most importantly it gave the team a small boost of momentum in their lightest workweek of the year (sans the All-Star break). The Cardinals are off today and Thursday. They are in Tampa Bay for a two game set against the Rays, who occupy the...
