St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny served as "bullpen catcher" during the middle of the ninth inning on Sunday. - (Photo credit: Ranken Jordan) St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny is just a few years removed from playing behind the plate everyday throughout the grueling 162 game baseball season. At 41 years of age, Matheny is still a pretty fit guy.  The stress of managing does not look like it has taken over his eating habits and workout regiment.  At least not yet. On Sunday afternoon, Matheny showed just how fit he was. With starting catcher Yadier Molina leaving the game in the top of the ninth inning as part of a double switch and with his replacement Tony Cruz making the last out of the inning, somebody needed to warm up new relief pitcher Fernando Salas. So, rather than leave Salas waiting for Cruz to get his gear on, Matheny grabbed a catcher's mitt and warmed up Salas himself.  Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch posted a pic...

It is time for us to stop taking Kyle Lohse for granted

I admit it. I am among the many who have consistently under-appreciated St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Kyle Lohse. The right-hander again delivered on an important stage on Monday night. In the big series opener at Pittsburgh, he picked up his 14th win of the season. Lohse was artificially limited to five innings by a 34-minute rain delay followed by manager Mike Matheny‘s...

Xavier Scruggs: The cage and the fans

St. Louis Cardinals Double-A first baseman Xavier Scruggs is back with news from Springfield.

Shelby Miller Loved Everywhere Except In Springfield

There’s some strong indications that Shelby Miller could be called up by the Cards when the rosters expand on September 1st.  ”Why should we care about some stunod with a 4.89 ERA in Triple-A?  Hey, Grey, we care about stunods now?”  That’s you talking to yourself just as a pretty girl walks by and thinks you’re crazy for talking to yourself.  But you don’t care,...

Lance Berkman to retire after season?

Lance Berkman is thinking about retiring after the 2012 season. - (Photo credit: Wikipedia) After being an integral part of the St. Louis Cardinals miracle World Series run in 2011, Lance Berkman's 2012 season has been beyond frustrating. One season after looking revived and young again, Berkman has been injury riddled and snake-bit this season.  The switch-hitting first...

Holliday powers Cardinals past Reds

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Matt Holliday had four hits and four RBIs, Adam Wainwright won his fifth consecutive start and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 8-2 on Sunday. Allen Craig homered and drove in three runs as St. Louis handed the Reds just their second series loss in 13 sets since the All-Star break. The Cardinals have won five of six to move within six games of...

Reds shut down by Cardinals' Wainwright

Cardinals 8, Reds 2

Matt Holliday had four hits and four RBIs to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 8-2 on Sunday. Allen Craig homered and drove in three runs as St. Louis handed the Reds just their second series loss in 13 sets since the All-Star break. The Cardinals have won five of six to move within six games of the NL Central-leading Reds. St. Louis' 17 hits are the most...

Cardinals demote Lynn

The St. Louis Cardinals have gotten tired of waiting for starting pitcher Lance Lynn to turn things around. The team removed Lynn from the starting rotation today after lasting only two innings last night. They’ve decided he’ll pitch out of the bullpen, his role in 2011. Based on his performance over the last couple months I can’t say I blame them for the move. @dgoold...

Holliday homers to lead Cards over Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Matt Holliday hit a tiebreaking home run and Kyle Lohse won his eighth consecutive decision, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night. Holliday led off the sixth inning with his 24th homer, a drive to right field off A.J. Burnett that put St. Louis ahead for good at 3-2. Lohse (13-2) pitched five innings before...

MLB Insiders: St. Louis Cardinals

The Pirates open a three-game series with St. Louis on Monday night at PNC Park. Right-hander A.J. Burnett toes the rubber for the Bucs. The Cards will counter with right-hander Kyle Lohse.

Game 128: Cardinals 2, Reds 8

Eight is the magic number of runs to score to win so far in this Reds-Cardinals series. St. Louis scored 8 and won the first game, and the Cincinnati Reds scored 8 yesterday to win the second of the three-game series. Mike Leake started for the Reds against Jaime Garcia, in what looked like a wild mis-match in favor of the Cardinals. It didn’t turn out that way. Leake wasn’t...

Cardinals-Pirates Preview

Things have changed in a major way in the seven days since the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates met in one of the season's most memorable games. The Cardinals have been surging and the Pirates have been stumbling since they played a 19-inning thriller, and the final 2012 series between these NL Central rivals and wild-card contenders begins Monday night at PNC Park...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. St. Louis Cardinals – Game 128

If you don’t want to read the vitriol below here is Mellie’s recap. Many are saying this series is it.  That this series will make or break the Pirates.  Allow me to call ********.  This series isn’t it.  This team is done.  Not only will they need the grace of God himself to make the [...]
