The Baby Birds finished Thursday with a 5-2 record as Memphis, Springfield, Palm Beach, State College, and Johnson City all won. Peoria and the GCL Cards were on the losing end. 2013 second round pick Oscar Mercado (pictured) hit his first professional home run in the GCL Cards loss. Here are quick game summaries followed by the official box score of each game: Memphis rallies to beat Iowa 4-3 on Thursday as the Redbirds scored twice in the ninth to take the lead. Brock Peterson had 2 hits, including a double, and an RBI. Mike O’Neill and Greg Garcia also each had 2 hits. Travis Tartamella and Chad Huffman had RBI’s on the night. Boone Whiting went 6 innings and allowed 6 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, and he struck out 6. Keith Butler picks up his 3rd win while allowing a run in 2 innings and Fernando Salas picked up his 12th save with a scoreless 9th. Player of the Game: Brock Peterson Box Score Springfield hangs on to beat NW Arkansas 3-2. Xavier Scruggs hit his 25th home run for the Cards in the second inning and would later add a triple. Ruben Gotay added his 15th home run in the 5th inning. Zach Petrick picked up his 3rd win while allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and striking out 7 over 6 1/3 innings. Petrick had them shut out through 6 innings. Lee Stoppelman picked up his 5th save with 1 2/3 scoreless innings and 3 strikeouts. Player of the Game: Xavier Scruggs Box Score Palm Beach beat St. Lucie 6-3 on Thursday. Patrick Wisdom picked up two hits, including his 14th overall HR, and 4 RBI’s. Jonathan Rodriguez hit his 17th homer for Palm Beach. David Popkins had 3 hits out of the lead-off spot. Alex Mejia scored three runs on a double and 2 walks. Marco Gonzales shut out the Mets over 4 2/3 innings only allowing 2 hit and 2 walks while striking out 3. Ronnie Shaban picked up his 17th save with 2 1/3 scoreless innings to close it out. Player of the Game: Patrick Wisdom Box Score  Peoria falls to Burlington 5-3 in 13 innings. Breyvic Valera and C.J. McElroy led the way with three hits each. Ildemaro Vargas had 2 hits and an RBI on the night. Brad Watson started and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits over 5 2/3 innings with 8 strikeouts. Joe Donofrio tossed 3 scoreless innings in relief and Dixon Llorens also added 2 scoreless innings.  Joe Scanio picked up his 4th loss on the season allowing an earned run in the 13th inning. Player of the Game: C.J. McElroy Box Score State College beats Williamsport 4-3 in 11 innings. Carson Kelly had 4 hits, an RBI, and 2 runs scored. Brett Wiley had 2 hits and David Washington hit his 10th home run in the 4th inning. Jimmy Bosco had 2 hits and the game winning RBI in the 11th. Willy Paulino allowed 3 runs on 3 hits in 5 2/3 innings. Chase Brookshire was stellar in relief only allowing a hit and a walk over 2 1/3 innings. Jhonny Polanco picked up his third win with 3 scoreless relief innings. Player of the Game: Carson Kelly Box Score Johnson City beat Burlington 7-4 on Thursday. Six Cardinals had 2 hits as the team had 14 total. Rowan Wick hit his 10th home run of the season and added 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored. Vaughn Bryan, Richy Pedroza, Justin Ringo, Steve Bean, and J.J. Altobelli each had 2 hits. Blake McKnight picked up his 3rd win while allowing 4 runs on 8 hits over 5 innings. Will Anderson, Zach Loraine, and Fernando Baez combined to toss 4 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Player of the Game: Rowan Wick Box Score The GCL Cards fall to the GCL Nats 7-6 despite 3 runs in the 8th and a run in the 9th. Oscar Mercado hit his first professional home run in the 9th for the Cards. Anthony Ray had 3 hits and 3 RBI’s as well.
