In a huge blow to the St. Louis Cardinals defense and offense, the club has placed Yadier Molina on the 15-day DL.  Molina was lifted in the fourth inning of last night's loss because of a knee injury.  He was later placed on the 15-day DL and will undergo an MRI.  Not good. Jennifer Langosch of MLB.com says Molina will fly to St. Louis today to get an MRI on his right knee.  The team and Molina need to assess the extent of the damage in his knee, but for now the injury is being called a sprain.  Molina began feeling pain in his knee before he was eventually lifted, but he tried to play through it. "I tried to play through it, but it's getting worse," Molina said after the Cardinals' 6-0 loss to the Pirates. "The smart thing is to take time off and try to fix it. I've been playing through that since June. Like anybody else, I am one of the guys who wants to be on the field playing. But right now I need time." Molina's injury comes at the most inopportune time.  The Cardinals are locked in a heated race with the Pittsburgh Pirates.  With last night's loss, the Cardinals now fall to 1.5 games back of the Pirates for first place in the division.  The Cardinals still own the top Wild Card slot in the National League, but they don't want to settle for the Wild Card.  Molina is considered by many to be the best player in the National League.  The loss of him - even if it is just for two weeks - could be devastating. The National League's starting catcher in the All-Star Game is hitting .331/.376/.482.  He has just eight home runs, but on top of his high average and on-base percentage, Molina is probably the best catcher in the league.  Not many would argue with that.  In his absence, the Cardinals will be forced to use Tony Cruz and Rob Johnson.  Neither can quite compare to Molina, but the team will have to make do.
