ST. LOUIS - Confident that this will be the year he reaches the big leagues, Cardinals prospect Shelby Miller took time on the recent Cardinals Caravan to ask David Freese and Jaime Garcia an important question. When I do get to the big leagues, what do I wear? Miller recalled. Because I dont want to look like a fool when I go in there, like wearing flip flops and all the big league guys are like, Wow this guy is a rookie. Miller, 21, enters the year as the No. 5 overall prospect in MLB.coms preseason rankings. After two dominant years in the Cardinals minor league system, hes expected to start the year with Triple-A Memphis. But the always-confident Miller doesnt expect to be there all year. I think that its on the track for this year, Miller said. Whether its in relief or I get to start, whether Im there half the year, I just want to be there at some point and I think that its going to happen as long as Im doing my part of it. If all my pitches are working and Im staying healthy, I think it can happen this year. Miller was the Cardinals first round draft choice No. 19 overall - in the 2009 MLB Draft. He spent all of 2010 at Low-A Quad Cities, where he went 7-5 with a 3.62 ERA in 24 starts. He had 140 strikeouts to just 33 walks in 104 13 innings. The hard-throwing right-hander started 2011 at High-A Palm Beach and posted a 2.89 ERA and 81 strikeouts in nine starts before being promoted to Double-A Springfield midway through the year. Miller was even better despite the jump in talent level, going 9-3 with a 2.70 ERA in 16 starts with Springfield to finish the year. He had 89 strikeouts to 33 walks and allowed just 72 hits in 86 23 innings. For the season, the right-hander posted a 2.77 ERA and had 170 strikeouts in 139 23 innings between the two levels. His progression is expected to continue with a promotion to Triple-A to start 2012. I feel like Im moving pretty fast, Miller said. The hardest thing is getting adapted to the better hitters. You can get away with throwing the fastball all day at the lower levels because Ive done it. Ive experienced it and got away with guys swinging at pitches in their eyes. At Springfield it wasnt like that. I had to throw my off-speed a lot more and that was something I wasnt used to going in there. But I finished the year the best Ive ever pitched in my life. I had some really good starts thee and all my pitches were working. Baseball America ranked Miller as the 50th best prospect in baseball before the 2010 season. He jumped to No. 13 overall prior to last season. The flamethrower received a non-roster invitation to big league spring training for the third time in three years and will look to make an impression on new Cardinals manager Mike Matheny and pitching coach Derek Lilliquist. Miller has a very little chance of making the big league club out of spring training. But he knows a good showing in front of the coaches could go a long way in helping him get the call at some point during the year. Spring training is going to be an ultimate test, Miller said. You have some new faces in the organization ... and you have to go in there and impress them and not let them think you arent ready. Its going to be a big spring training, definitely the biggest so far. I think Im going to go in there with the right mindset and be ready for a good spring for sure. Theres no doubt the Brownwood, Texas, native will pitch in the big leagues in the near future. And theres little argument that hell eventually be a No. 1 or No. 2 starter. But whether that happens this year or not remains to be seen. I think that my time will come soon, Miller said. If its not this year, it will be next year. Ill keep doing the right things and trying to get better as a pitcher and working with all my pitches. I think everything will fall into place. I think its going to happen. And when it does, Miller will be ready. Hell even know what to wear.

Roy Oswalt and Market Determination Revisited

Yesterday in this space, this author wrote that Roy Oswalt had earned the right to limit his market choices and to stick to his price in negotiations as a free agent. The piece was a counterpoint to another writer who stated that Oswalt "had too big a head" and can move along from the St. Louis Cardinals' feeding trough. The point was also made that Oswalt is well worth...

Red Schoendienst celebrates his 89th birthday

Hall of Famer Red Schoendienst has done it all for the St. Louis Cardinals – All-Star player, World Champion manager and now sage adviser to the scores who followed. Making his St. Louis debut in 1945, the switch-hitting second baseman played 15 seasons with the Cardinals, including in the 1946 World Series. The 10-time National League All-Star also appeared in two more Series...

Cardinals' health challenges a concern

I'm worried about the St. Louis Cardinals -- and not just because they've lost first baseman Albert Pujols, manager Tony La Russa and, at least for the time being, pitching coach Dave Duncan. Those departures alone are enough to give one pause about the defending World Series champions, but my concern runs deeper. This is a physically fragile club. Free-agent right-hander...

Infield Depth Is A Big Question Mark For The Cardinals Heading Into Spring Training

Much like last season, the St. Louis Cardinals will enter spring training with a little bit of uncertainty, but for the most part the team should feel comfortable and confident. The Cardinals are, after all, the World Series champions. They currently have seven viable options for the starting rotation (if you include Kyle McClellan and Marc Rzepczynski) and could still land Roy Oswalt...

Phillies Still Remain In Contact With Roy Oswalt

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports, the Red Sox, Reds, and Phillies all remain in the running for Roy Oswalt. Oswalt is scrambling to find a new home with only two weeks before the start of spring workouts. Oswalt's top choices are the Rangers and the Cardinals, but both have financial limitations. Oswalt had a positive experience in Philadelphia, where he went 16-11...

Cards loaded with draft picks in 2012

ST. LOUIS - News of Edwin Jacksons one-year deal with the Washington Nationals helped finalize the Cardinals lengthy list of draft picks early in this years Amateur Draft. The Cardinals will have six selections in the top 100 of the June draft, their most since also having six picks in the top 100 in the 2005 draft. Among the selections that year were Colby Rasmus and Tyler Greene...

Player Profile #91: Adam Wainwright | SP | STL

At this time last year there were many people, myself included, touting Adam Wainwright as a top five starting pitcher and maybe the best pitcher overall. But that all changed when Wainwright walked off the mound one fateful February day last spring and baseball fans, Jonny Gomes aside, heard the two words they hate the most…Tommy. John. The good news, though, is that Tommy...

More Than One Reason Why Beltran Got Away

Why didn't the Giants re-sign Carlos Beltran? The question continues to be asked.

Pirates sign reliever Brian Tallet

Kevin Goldstein from Baseball Prospectus tweeted today that the Pirates signed left-handed reliever Brian Tallet. Tallet’s deal is a minor league contract and does not yet include an invite to spring training (Major League camp). After hearing that an invite to camp doesn’t go along with this signing, I think it is safe to say that Tallet will be starting off the year...

Jackson Inks Deal With Nationals

A potential option to join the 2012 edition of the St. Louis Cardinals was taken off the board yesterday, and this time it was an already familiar face. Edwin Jackson joined the Washington Nationals about midway through the afternoon, ending an interesting foray into free agency. Jackson, who entered the winter as one of the bigger names on the pitching market, remained homeless...

Cardinals Major League Notebook: 02/05/12

The St. Louis Cardinals will make five of the first 58 selections in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft.

Nats Sign Another Solid Starter

Edwin Jackson to the Nats it is, according to Jon Heyman, and it sounds like he’s getting a one-year deal. Didn’t see that one coming. For those unfamiliar with Jackson, he’s a solid starter who averaged about 200 innings and a 4.00 ERA over the past four seasons with the Rays, Tigers, Diamondbacks, White Sox and Cardinals. He’s 28 years old and strikes out...

Edwin Jackson agrees to one-year deal with the Nationals

Right handed pitcher Edwin Jackson has agreed to a one-year deal with the Washington...

Pirates sign Brian Tallet

The Bucs signed veteran lefty Brian Tallet today. The 34 year-old has suffered through injuries and a couple of poor seasons recently, so I would assume that it’s a minor league deal. Tallet has been reasonably effective against lefties, so he’ll probably join Daniel Moskos and Doug Slaten in the group that will be fighting for a second lefty bullpen slot behind Tony...
