ST. LOUIS -- Mitchell Boggs wont be pitching for the Cardinals again but he could return to the majors soon after being traded to the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday. Unable to agree with the Rockies on a player in return for Boggs, the Cardinals will receive 206,000 from the Rockies that can be used in signing international players. Specifically, the Rockies sent the Cardinals their fourth-round slot (93rd overall) in the international signing bonus pool. The Cardinals entered the international signing period that began July 2 with a little more than 2 million to spend on international free agents. At this level, its about consistency, the ability to repeat and make pitches, general manager John Mozeliak said Tuesday moments before the Cardinals-Astros game. When he was up here, he wasnt able to do it. Boggs enjoyed a stellar 2012 as the teams primary setup man, posting a 2.12 ERA in 78 appearances. The performance earned the 29-year-old right-hander a spot on Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. Boggs, however, did not pitch much in the Classic and said afterward that as much as he enjoyed the experience, he would not pitch in the WBC again without assurance that he would get more work. The one part he struggled with a little bit this spring was he didnt get a lot of work, Mozeliak said. When he got back into our camp, he was thrown into it and never got on track. Mozeliak said that Boggs, who was put in the closers role after Jason Motte went on the disabled list late in spring training, was disappointed. He had higher expectations going into the season, Mozeliak said. For it to end like this disappointed him. He said a lot of great things about this organization and the people in it. I think hes going to miss that. In 14 23 innings over two stints with the Cardinals, Boggs allowed 20 runs, 21 hits and walked 14. He converted only two of his five save chances. His numbers were not much better at Class AAA Memphis, where he finished with a 5.70 ERA in 23 23 innings. It was frustrating for everybody involved, Mozeliak said. In Mitchells case, I know he wishes he had a different season. He had high expectations going into the year. To be where he ended up -- pitching almost half the season to date in Triple A -- is not where he wanted to be. According to mlb.com, the Rockies are sending Boggs to Tulsa, their Class AA affiliate in the Texas League.
