MIAMI (AP) -- Kyle Lohse didn't allow a hit until the seventh inning and pitched into the eighth Wednesday night to help the World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals spoil the Miami Marlins' debut in their new ballpark, 4-1. The Marlins' new animated home-run sculpture never budged. It was the fourth inning before they managed a baserunner, and but the time they scored in the eighth, they trailed 4-0. The crowd of 36,601 included newly retired Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, who quietly rooted for his former team from the press box. Lohse went 7 1-3 innings, allowing only two hits and one run. David Freese, the World Series MVP, had a two-run single in the first inning to give Lohse the cushion he needed.

Ozzie Guillen hearts Derek Jeter

The new Miami Marlins manager went on an awesome Ozzie rant today, like only Ozzie can, going on and on and on about Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter. “My favorite player in the history of the game — nobody represents baseball better than that guy, Derek Jeter. Nobody. Not Mickey Mantle, Not Babe Ruth, Not Willie Mays” he said “This guy is God, a baseball god. “ ...

Marlins open new ballpark against champion Cards

Perched atop the Miami Marlins' colorful, provocative home-run sculpture is a blue marlin, poised for splashdown whenever the home team hits one out. Call the artwork what you will - gaudy, goofy, grotesque, great - but there's no denying it's new. For the Marlins, that's what this season is all about. They've become a big-spending, attention-grabbing team as...

Carlos Zambrano hopes fish tanks at Marlins Park will relieve his stress

Carlos Zambrano must have spent the offseason with Phil Jackson, because dude is sounding like a Zen master. Big Z, who was acquired by the Marlins in January, says his favorite part about the new Marlins Ballpark is the aquariums behind home plate because of their calming presence. “I don’t know how many people have fish tanks in their house but psychologists say it can make...

2012 Season Preview

This season is considered the biggest campaign since 1993 for the Miami Marlins as they embark on a new chapter in their history.   A new name, a new ballpark, a new look and a new feel all contribute to what promises to be a historic and memorable season.   For the first time, the Marlins will play their home games in an actual ballpark instead of a converted football stadium...

Buehrle strong, offense not in Marlins' loss

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Jay Bruce homered and drove in a pair of runs, and Johnny Cueto dominated in his first opening-day start, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-0 victory over the Miami Marlins on Thursday before one of their biggest crowds. Cueto (1-0) anchored the Reds' first opening-day shutout since 1980, when Frank Pastore beat Atlanta's Phil Niekro 9-0. The right-hander...

Hits and Misses: Marlins Pregame Was A Disgrace, Niese Deal Is Not A Wilpon PR Move, It’s Opening Day!

Just a couple of thoughts on that bizarre Marlins pregame ceremony and the reports of a 5-year Niese extension. What a despicable act by the Miami Marlins last night, who decided it would be a brilliant idea to wheel out the ailing boxing icon Muhammad Ali as part of their pre-game ceremonies. Sorry, but that was a terrible call, and to use someone so legendary and obviously...

Happy Opening Night, St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins Fans!
