Why Aren’t the Pirates Keeping Paul Maholm?

It seems that every year there is a big story in the off-season that always leads to the same result.  The Pittsburgh Pirates make a move, the move is unfavorable to the fan base, and the immediate reaction is to speculate on what this means for the remainder of the off-season.  Usually the thought is “the Pirates will do nothing, and will go in to the following season with...

The Last Pitch Paul Maholm Ever Threw as a Pirate

Now that Paul Maholm is officially not getting a new deal from the Pirates this offseason, it's time to start thinking about him in the past tense. Maholm had a pretty solid career for the Pirates, and was one of our best players over the last five years (although that is hardly saying anything). August 17, 2011 was the last start Maholm made for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and...

Pirates’ Charlie Morton Undergoes Successful Hip Surgery, Out Six Months

According to Oval Athletics’ Kristy Robinson, Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Charlie Morton underwent surgery yesterday to repair a torn labrum in his left hip. The surgery was successful, according to Robinson’s twitter. Typical recovery time for this surgery is about six months. “There is no specific injury date or cause of injury,” Robinson tweeted, “...

This Date in Pirates History: October 13

On this date in 1960 the Pirates won game seven of the World Series at Forbes Field by a 10-9 score over the New York Yankees on a walk-off home run from Bill Mazeroski. The win gave the Pirates their third World Series title overall and first one in 35 years.  Mazeroski scores the series winning run The Pirates took an early 2-0 lead in the game on a home run by Rocky Nelson in...

Maholm set to test free agency

The Pittsburgh Pirates have indicated that they will probably not be picking up Paul Maholm’s $9.75 million team option for 2012. Maholm will test the free agent market this offseason.

Morton has hip surgery

Pitcher Charlie Morton had surgery Monday to repair a torn labrum in his left hip and might not be ready for the start of the 2012 season, the Pirates announced Tuesday. But Morton said he hopes to be ready for opening day. "That's what I'm shooting for and that's what I'm hoping for," he said. "The physical therapist here knows that. The surgeon here knows that.

Pirates will decline Paul Maholm's option

Well, so much for that. The Pirates are going to decline Maholm's team option for $9.75 million and the pitcher says he's going to "test free agency." I sincerely doubt he'll be back. Maholm's not Sandy Koufax or anything, but unless Neal Huntington has some serious tricks up his sleeve, the 2012 Pirate rotation is going to be the biggest Disaster Area since Kakrafoon.

Gerrit Cole Makes His AFL Debut Tomorrow

Jonathan Mayo reports that Gerrit Cole will make his Arizona Fall League debut Friday for the Mesa Solar Sox.  The Pittsburgh Pirates held Cole back in the instructional leagues to make a few more starts before sending him to the AFL.  He arrived in Arizona earlier this week, and is listed as the probable starter for tomorrow’s game.

Pirates Will Decline Option For Paul Maholm

The Pirates have decided to decline their 2012 option for Paul Maholm, according to Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (on Twitter). The left-hander would have cost $9.75MM in 2012.

Pirates' Morton has hip surgery, out six months

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Charlie Morton will be out about six months after having hip surgery.

What are the Pirates trying to do in 2012?

For a long time, it was easy to know what the Pirates' strategy should be for every off-season: don't sign old guys that will block young guys, try to find bargains to plug the remaining holes, and don't worry about the next season's win total because 1.) the fans were already worn down and apathetic from so many years of losing and probably wouldn't get worse...
