In the top of the sixth inning during last night's Rockies-Brewers game, Milwaukee center fielder Carlos Gomez made an amazing leaping catch at the center field wall to rob Colorado left fielder Carlos Gonzalez of a home run. It was an awesome catch that kept the Brewers' deficit at two runs for the timebeing, but ended up not meaning much in the grand scheme of things as the Rockies went on to win the game 7-3. But when I saw this catch, I was reminded of a familiar catch a decade earlier, on a bit of a grander stage. The 2002 All-Star Game at Miller Park has gone down in history for its result: an unfufilling 7-7 tie, resulting in no MVP named in the very year that the late Ted Williams had the All-Star Game MVP award named after him. Of course, the lasting image from this game wasn't Torii Hunter scaling the wall to rob Barry Bonds of a homer (at the height of his powers) in the first inning, but instead fans mercilessly booing MLB commissioner Bud Selig and chanting "LET THEM PLAY!" The aftermath from Gomez's catch wasn't nearly as vitriolic, but it did end with fans leaving Miller Park disappointed. At least fans across the country weren't angry and bitter this time around, though. [follow]
