For New York Mets fans there was a lot to not like about last night’s 5-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs, but aside from the poor fielding and lack of power that has plagued the team at various points throughout the season, something else became apparent as the contest came to a close.  Carlos Marmol absolutely owns the Mets.  With another scoreless inning on Tuesday Marmol lowered his career ERA to 1.35 against New York, but his more recent numbers are even more dominant.  Over the past three season the Cubs closer hasn’t allowed an earned run against the Mets in 8 1/3 IP and has converted all six of his save opportunities.

Even more amazing is this current rosters inability to even lay the bat on the ball against the 29-year-old:

As best I can tell this Mets roster is now 1-27 against Carlos Marmol with 16 K’s and 3 BB’s. Ike has the only hit. #YesThatCarlosMarmol about 1 hour ago via webReplyRetweetFavorite @metszilla metszilla

It turns out Ike Davis is the only Met on the roster with a hit and when his turn came up in the line-up in the top of the 9th he was already in the clubhouse after being ejected the inning before.

I tell ya, when it rains it pours and this team has been so power starved they simply can’t afford to be without Ike (even if he’s only batting .192 on the year).

As it worked out Wright walked and after Lucas Duda struck out Ike would have been up and represented the tying run, but instead of a guy who had homered in 3 of his last 6 games coming to the plate, Omar Quintanilla was forced into action and flew out to shallow right field.  Ike lost his cool, the Mets lost the game, and Marmol looked unhittable.  Maybe he’s turned the clock back to 2010, but more than likely, he was just happy to be facing the Mets.
