It was a rough night for the baby Birds as all three teams in action lost. Springfield had a double-header washed out and Peoria is on their All-Star break. Carlos Martinez had his worst start since returning to the minor leagues and a 30+ pitch first inning is probably what did him in. David Popkins didn’t skip a beat from his first half success. He extended his hitting streak to 13 games and is hitting roughly .540 in those 13 games. The State College Spikes, the Cardinals Short-Season (A) affiliate kicked off its season on Monday with a loss at the hands of the Williamsport Crosscutters. Juan Bautista was solid in his 5 innings, but the offense struggled to score. Two 2103 draft picks made their debuts for the Spikes as Jimmy Bosco was hitless and catcher Alex DeLeon had a hit in 3 at-bats. Here are the results from Monday’s action: Memphis (35-37) 3, Albuquerque 4 In a suspension filled series, the Isoptopes sweep the Memphis Redbirds as top prospect Carlos Martinez couldn’t turn things around on Monday.
