PLAYERS: Starlin Castro
TEAMS: Chicago Cubs
Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum benched shortstop Starlin Castro for the above synaptic malfunction, wherein he lost track of the number of outs in the fifth inning. It allowed the Cardinals' John Jay to tag up at third and race home for a 2-0 St. Louis lead. Castro has done this sort of thing before, so the benching is more of a well-earned thing than an overreaction to a not-uncommon mistake. After the game, a Cardinals' 4-0 victory, Cubs manager Dale Sveum said: Dale Sveum on Starlin Castro: "There are only so many meetings ... When you've played this much baseball, you have to do it yourself.'' -- Phil Rogers (@ChiTribRogers) August 18, 2013 Castro didn't disappear and sulk after being pulled, staying in the dugout to support his teammates. He admitted his error to reporters after the game. Starlin Castro: "I know the outs, the situation, I just get my head down. A mental mistake, no reason for that. I feel really, really bad.'' --...

Chicago Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro was benched in the fifth inning of Saturday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals after giving up a run on a short fly ball with a delayed throw to home plate because he lost track of the number of outs. With one out and runners on second and third, Cardinals batter Matt Carpenter hit a high popup to short left field. Castro tracked...

Cubs' manager Dale Sveum losing patience with Starlin Castro

The most important takeaway from Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum’s mid-game benching of shortstop Starlin Castro isn’t how Castro reacted after the Cubs 4-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday. It’s how Sveum reacted. “He’s played in the big leagues long enough and we’ve had our discussions; it comes to that point and time where you have to cross that bridge...

Dale Sveum ejected, Cubs drop series against Cardinals

Sunday afternoon was the last of a three game set against arch rival St. Louis. Though the Cubs silenced the birds in the first game, the last two games weren’t as kind to Chicago. The Cardinals used Saturday’s game to return the favor by shutting out the Cubs, and only allowed one run to score in Sunday’s match up. On Saturday, the Cubs actually played pretty well for the...

Chicago Cubs shutout rival Cards to start series

Today, baseball saw one of its most storied rivalries renewed, as the Chicago Cubs started a three game series against the St. Louis Cardinals. The newest chapter of this rivalry began with a Cubs win, as they beat the Cardinals 7-0. There were many reasons why the Cubs won this game, and appeared to do so with ease. One of the main reasons was the performance of their starting pitcher...

Saturday Cubs thoughts

Today I hung out with the family at IKEA (yay cheap furniture!) so I missed most of the Cubs game, in which they pretty much sucked and couldn’t score runs (again).  There was a moment on the way home when I tuned in to the radio and while I thought Starlin Castro was up after Donnie Murphy, it was instead Cody Ransom.  I thought I had missed something and was hoping Castro wasn’t...

CM Punk to Braun: "Shut the F*ck Up"

In addition to being a WWE Superstar, CM Punk is also a huge Chicago Cubs fan. So, naturally, you would suspect the lifelong fan of the "Loveable Losers" has no love for the rival Milwaukee Brewers or any of their player.  When asked about the Brewers recently suspended star Ryan Braun...the "Straight Edge Superstar" was pretty open about whether or not he...
