I've been traveling for the last couple of days, which is why I haven't posted much of anything. Let's get caught up.  The Pirates have logged two narrow victories over the Mets in the last two days, which has them tied again with the Cardinals the day before the All-Star Break. I told you on Friday that everything would be fine if the Pirates swept the Mets.  In order to get that sweep, Gerrit Cole will be taking the mound this afternoon instead of Jeff Locke, because Locke's been dealing with lower back soreness will scratch him both from today's start and the All-Star Game. You can tell this is a game that the Pirates want to win, because of Cole's presence on the mound. The Pirates had previously discussed demoting him for a week and a half or so to stay on a regular schedule over the break; that probably won't happen now. He's on regular rest today because of Thursday's off-day.  After last night's 2-for-4 with a homer perform...

First Pitch: Gregory Polanco Should Be Untouchable

Gregory Polanco should be untouchable. I’m pretty sure I built the Gregory Polanco bandwagon. I was calling him a sleeper and one of the most promising international prospects on the Pirates back at the start of the 2011 season. That’s one year before his big breakout in West Virginia. I called that breakout season in March 2012 after seeing Polanco in Spring Training for about...

Pittsburgh Pirates: Mid-Season Report Card

Pedro Alvarez and the Pittsburgh Pirates have very good reasons to be all smiles Team: Pittsburgh Pirates Record: 56-37 (1.0 GB) Biggest Surprise of First Half: While the entire Pittsburgh Pirates team has been one giant surprise at how well they have played, one individual who stands out as the biggest surprise is none other than Jeff Locke. Locke started the year in the Pirates...

Pirates' Jeff Locke scratched from start and will miss All-Star Game

Pittsburgh Pirates' All-Star pitcher Jeff Locke was scratched from Sunday's start and from Tuesday's All-Star Game following lower back stiffness experienced from his most recent start. As reported by Tom Singer of MLB.com, "Locke reported the discomfort after a seven-inning outing on Monday against Oakland. He went through his regular bullpen session on...

Jordy Mercer Breaks Slide with Walkoff Single in 3-2 Win Over Mets

Pedro Alvarez was characteristically nonplussed about his 1st-inning home run after his Derby selection. Jordy Mercer was struggling at the plate through July when he came up in the 11th inning with two runners on. The Pirates’ now-second baseman stepped in 4-for-31 over the month with no extra-base hits. No time like walkoff time to stop a skid in front of 39,036 fans, PNC Park’s...

Game 93 Preview: Pirates vs. Mets

Mets (40-50) at Pirates (56-36) 1:35 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Pirates go for a sweep of the Mets today, and a win would clinch a share of first place and baseball’s best record heading in to the four-day All Star break. You know what else a win would do? It would tie the club record for most wins before the All Star break (1971 – when they won the...

Game 93: Pirates vs. Mets Recap

Source: FanGraphs It’s the first game since I took over the recap writing duties on this fine blog that I’ve had to write about the loss. I’ll wait while all of you thank me for preventing the collapse. A loss today seemed rather foreseeable though. Gerrit Cole is certainly no slouch but it’s never good…

Pirates 3, Mets 2

All of a sudden people are feeling a lot better about the Pirates again after an exciting walkoff win over the Mets Friday night at sold out PNC Park. The Bucs have won two in a row and certainly appear to have put the four game losing streak in the rear view mirror. Leading up to the game, all the talk was about Pedro Alvarez, David Wright, and the Home Run Derby “drama.” Pedro...

At the break

Let's spend one moment thinking back to April 1st. On April 1st, I was awfully concerned about the upcoming season. Simply put, I thought it was time for the Pirates to move to the proverbial "next level" of their long rebuilding process and I didn't think that the team, as assembled, was ready to make that jump. I was concerned that they were wasting years of Andrew...

Pittsburgh Heel Turn

Well I hope Pirates fans feel better now that they've gotten their anger out of their system towards David Wright. I hope their announcers are also happy that they fanned the flames of their already agitated fan base to stir up some sort of rah rah ballpark interest. Good for them. Even though they have four all-stars and 54 wins going into Friday's game, and therefore a...
