INSIDER: CC Sabathia has lived up to his ace role in a Yankee uniform becoming the Major Leagues' first 19-game winner and Robinson Cano homered as the Yankees edged the Red Sox, 3-0.

ON THE MOUND:

CC Sabathia fired seven innings of scoreless one-hit ball against the Red Sox. CC walked two and struck out eight in a 96-pitch (57 for strikes) performance, retiring the first 11 batters he faced before issuing a full-count walk to Victor Martinez in the fourth inning. He carried a no-hit bid into the fifth before Mike Lowell's sharp single to center field.

Phil Hughes pitched a scoreless eighth and Mariano Rivera locked down the ninth inning for his 43rd save, as the Yankees defeated the Red Sox for the eighth time in nine tries, lowering their magic number to clinch the AL East to just one game.

THE OFFENSE:

With both Sabathia and Red Sox counterpart Daisuke Matsuzaka piling up zeroes across the scoreboard, Robinson Cano broke up the scoreless duel in the sixth, launching his 24th home run of the season the other way and off the top of the left-field fence.

The Cano homer put Matsuzaka on the losing end, trailing after seven frames of six-hit ball, walking five and striking out three in his first appearance against the Yankees in 2009. The Yankees were 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position before Johnny Damon blooped a two-run single off Billy Wagner in the eighth, with both runs unearned.
