Boston Red Sox
The New York Yankees were hoping to keep up in the American League playoff race on Saturday afternoon as they squared off in the second game of the series against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
However, they would be playing this game without an important bat in the lineup, as Alfonso Soriano was scratched 10 minutes before the game with a sprained right thumb, and his status going forward is unknown, but it was enough to take him out of the game.
The Yankees sent ace CC Sabathia onto the mound to square off against another lefty in Jon Lester, who has been very good in his career against the Yankees.
Boston struck early against Sabathia as Will Middlebrooks’ RBI groundout in the bottom of the second inning gave the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third inning, David Ortiz’s RBI double gave Boston a 2-0 lead and then later in the inning, Jonny Gomes’ RBI single made it a 3-0 lead, as Sabathia put the Yankees in a really early hole.
In the top of the fourth inning, Curti...

CC Sabathia (13-12, 4.82 ERA) continues the hunt for the Yanks for October, standing in his way is Jon Lester (13-8 3.86 ERA.) Sabathia was outpitched by the Orioles’ Chris Tillman in his last outing, taking the loss after allowing three earned runs in 7 1/3 innings. He is 2-1 with a bloated 7.15 ERA in four starts against Boston this year.
Lester has been tremendous in the second...
The New York Yankees activated pitcher David Phelps from the 60-Day DL Saturday according to the Yankees official Twitter page. The team moved Derek Jeter to the 60-Day DL to open a spot on the 40-man roster for Phelps.
The Yankees originally placed Phelps on the DL with a forearm strain on July 6 two days after he allowed four runs in six innings against the Twins. He had only...
The Red Sox saw Mariano Rivera for the last time in a regular season game at Fenway Park on Sunday, and there was no shortage of moving tributes to the closer.
Although many of the Fenway Faithful will be glad their team no longer has to contend with Rivera, most can’t deny the class, composure and and success he has had over the past 19 seasons. Dick Flavin, Fenway Park’s unofficial...
This weekend could not have gone worse for the Yankees. That's not hyperbole. It's the simple truth. After they'd fought so hard to win 3 of 4 against the Baltimore Orioles and jumped both Baltimore and Cleveland in the Wild Card race, the Yankees went into Fenway Park and got swept. The pitching was the culprit in all three games, sinking the Yankee offense into...

New York Yankees 4 – Boston Red Sox 8
Gritty comeback efforts go for nothing in tonight’s 8-4 loss to the Boston Red Sox.
In the first inning, the Red Sox sent John Lackey to the mound and the Yankees took advantage of the defensive alignments. With two outs and a heavily shifted to the right side infield, Robinson Cano dropped the perfect bunt...
The Yankees last game against Boston this season has Ivan Nova (8-4 3.17 ERA) taking on the undefeated Clay Buchholz (10-0, 1.61 ERA.) Nova was limited to 79 pitches his last time out due to triceps tightness, but the Yankees believe he can stay in the rotation. He has faced Boston just once this year, allowing three runs in a four-inning start on September 5th. “You never want...
If it were earlier in the season, or if he were still a member for the Chicago Cubs, Alfonso Soriano would likely be taking a few games off to rest his ailing right right. However, he's now a member of the New York Yankees, a team in the midst of a playoff chase, and Soriano, who's dealing with a thumb injury, told reporters -- including Bryan Hoch of MLB.com -- that he...
Prior to getting slaughtered 9-2 to complete a sweep of the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox honored Yankees closer Mariano Rivera.
It was a classy affair at Fenway Park so big props to the Red Sox organization for going above and beyond to honor Mo.
In case you missed the ceremony, here it is in full:

New York Yankees 1 — Boston Red Sox 5
Offense held down by Jon Lester in today’s 5-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox.
CC Sabathia got today’s start and had a perfect first inning but it went downhill from there. Mike Napoli would hit an infield single that Mark Reynolds would field at third base. The throw from Reynolds would go wide of first and...
New York Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez has left Sunday night's game against the Boston Red Sox because of a tight right calf.
Vernon Wells pinch hit for Rodriguez in the fifth inning.
Rodriguez was 1 for 2 with a single in the game, which is the Yankees' last in Boston this year.
New York entered the night trailing AL wild-card leaders Oakland and Texas by 2...
I bet he purposely pissed on the floor too
You have to give it to the Canseco brothers, if anything, they love the game of baseball. At least that's the image they portray. Jose Canseco may be the Godfather of performance enhancers, but he did start the process that has cleaned up the game, the likes we have never seen. Ozzie Canseco was never the player his brother was. He was drafted by the New York Yankees in the...
The Yankees entered Friday night’s series opener in Boston in the thick of the wild card race. They left Fenway Park on Sunday night three games out of the last playoff spot, dropping their season record against Boston to 6-13 after a weekend sweep in which they were outscored 22-7.
New York is now 79-71 with just 12 games remaining in its season. Injuries and ineffective pitching...
The Red Sox completed the sweep of their three-game set against the Yankees Sunday night taking the finale of the season series 9-2.
The Sox finish the season series 13-6 against the Yankees winning the series for just the second time since 2005. The 13 wins match the most against the Yankees in a season by any team since the 1976 Orioles went 13-5.
The win combined with the...
The New York Yankees got beaten badly in Beantown.
Mr. Met making a funny.
It was a three game sweep that made Yankee fans everywhere question whether this 2013 team is even good enough to compete if they happen to slide into the postseason, which would be via Wild Card berth only.
That is because the moment the Red Sox finished off the Yankees last night, they eliminated the Bronx...
