Chad Cordero is reportedly up with the team and will indeed be taking Ken Griffey’s spot on the Mariner roster, according to reports. Cordero hasn’t appeared in the big leagues since April 29, 2008 with Washington, recovering from a labrum tear in his throwing shoulder. Cordero was an All Star in 2005 when he saved 47 games for the newly relocated Nationals.
Cordero has pitched well enough for the Tacoma Rainiers this season (after a terrible go-around in 2009), striking out 22 and walking 4 with a 3.19 FIP in 19.2 innings. Cordero wasn’t overpowering before the injury so don’t expect him to come in and blow hitters away. He’ll mix his pitches and miss a few bats but will most likely rely on Safeco’s spacious outfield and the defense behind him to get out.
All that aside, it’s great to see him back. Players aren’t often able to climb back after such a severe labrum tear.
