Found June 28, 2012 on Philliedelphia:
It seems as if millions of prayers have been answered.  Chad Qualls has been designated for assignment. In a corresponding move, Jeremy Horst has been called up. The Phillies signed Qualls to a one-year $1.15 MM contract in the offseason with hopes that he could continue his success as a relief pitcher as he did last season with Arizona. In 2011, Qualls went 6-8 with a 3.51 ERA in 77 games. Things were not as the Phillies or Qualls hoped this season as Qualls is currently 1-1 with a 4.60 ERA in 35 games. Jeremy Horst, who the Phillies acquired from the Cincinnati Reds for Wilson Valdez, is 2-1 with a  2.11 ERA and two saves in 26 games for Triple-A Lehigh. Charlie will no longer have to put Qualls in during a lead-threatening situation anymore. Maybe the Phillies' bullpen can start holding games now.  Follow Erik on Twitter @ErikSeyboldPHI.

Kendrick Kills Phils in 1st; Pirates Split Series

Kendrick buried them early (AP) The Phillies keep finding new ways to piss the fans off. In Thursday’s 5-4, finale loss to the Pirates, Kyle Kendrick did them in before their first at bat. KENDRICK KILLS THEM EARLY -Sometimes, in baseball, it comes down to one inning. The Phillies were unable to overcome Kyle Kendrick’s awful start. He put them in a 5-0 hole they could not recover...

New Lineup, Same Old Bullpen

Chase Utley with shades of Joe Dimaggio in 1949, homering in his first at-bat of the season following an injury. (AP) Not even the return of Chase Utley could save the Phillies tonight, as the team fell to the Pirates 11-7 behind a hapless effort from the bullpen–a unit which has been the Achilles heel all season. CHASE RETURNS IN STYLE -Two out, nobody on, 2-2 count...

Carlos Ruiz for President… Or at Least MVP

Enough can not be said about Carlos Ruiz’s performance so far this year. It has been nothing short of amazing that a 33 year old catcher has stepped up the way that he has. After another 3-4 night at the plate, Ruiz is batting .361. That is not only tops for catchers or in the National League, but is the best in all of baseball. Chew on that for a minute. With Ruiz’s bomb of...

Yesterday, ESPN's Jayson Stark reported that the Phillies may trade Jim Thome to an American League team, who can use him more appropriately as a designated hitter: The Philadelphia Phillies are quietly making Jim Thome available to American League teams looking for a designated hitter, executives of two AL clubs said Thursday." We all knew when the Phillies signed...

2 Losses and 2 Wins in 2 Days

The Phillies may have lost the last two games of the Pirates series, but I argue that in those same two days they had two big wins.Huh?!?!?!?!11-7 loss yesterday.  Michael Martinez optioned to Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs- win.5-4 loss today.  Chad Qualls designated for assignment- win.Sure, falling further back in the standings stinks, but getting rid of those two pieces of garbage is a major coup.

Phillies Prospects Making All-Star Games

There won't be as many Phillies in the mid-summer's class as there have been in recent years. This is a product of being in last place 78 games into the season. While we'll only have a couple in San Diego, the Phillies affiliates in the minor leagues will be represented- and even host an All-Star game. Ryne Sandberg will take a couple of his IronPigs to the AAA All...

Baseball Talk Philadelphia: Friday Fan Rant

Tom Van Leer leads off with a lot to say: Dear Baseball Talk: Philadelphia Where do I start. It is hard to believe this team. Just when our Offence is starting to get in motion our bullpen continues to be mediocre. Last night the team, the fans, and the city was the happiest its been since Opening Day. The Big Piece Takes Big Step

Photo Courtesy of Renee Cendrowski. It may not have been his biggest test, but it was a test nonetheless, and one Ryan Howard passed.
