Found April 09, 2012 on North Side Notch:
Charlie Morton started for AAA-Indianapolis today in his last step before joining the big league club. In 7 2/3 innings, he gave up just one run, six hits, and one walk. He struck out eight while throwing 98 pitches. Morton is eligible to come off the disabled list this week and is set to be the Pirates’ starter this Sunday against San Francisco, which will be the first time the Pirates will need a 5th starter.

Mike Crotta undergoes elbow surgery

Ever wonder what a bone spur was? Crotta shared one of his with us. Pirates’ minor league reliever Michael Crotta underwent surgery on his pitching elbow courtesy of Dr. James Andrews today. The surgery was to remove bone spurs in his elbow. Crotta detailed the day a lot through his Twitter account and even provided us with some pictures. Crotta pitched in 15 games for Pittsburgh...

Pittsburgh Pirates: Great Start to Season

Bedard; Image credit Jared Wickerham Even though the cross-state rival Phillies were without star players 1B Ryan Howard and 2B Chase Utley, the Pirates’ found themselves staring down the double-barrel combo of SP Roy Halladay and SP Cliff Lee to kick off their 2012 campaign, not to mention a steadily-improving Vance Worley in game 3. All told, the Pirates stood toe-to-toe with...

Good news on the farm

The Pirates were off today, but I think we can chalk it up as another good day for the organization based on the minor league results that have been coming in tonight. 2011 first overall pick Gerrit Cole made his pro debut for Bradenton. He allowed one run on four hits in four innings and struck out seven. I would assume he was on a pitch count and could have probably gone deeper...

Morton ready to rejoin Pirates

Bucs right-handed starter Charlie Morton pitched 7.2 innings in a rehab start with Class AAA Indianapolis Monday night, striking out eight batters and walking one while allowing one run against the Columbus. The Bucs will probably promote Morton in time for Saturday's game against the San Francisco Giants. PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko spoke with Morton at the end...

An error and a leaky bullpen allows the Pirates to win their second straighth walk-off victory against the Phils as the Phils lose, 5-4.

An error on a strikeout, and a leaky bullpen allows the Pirates to pull off another walk-off win against the Phils as they lose in the bottom of the ninth, 5-4. The Phils took the lead in the first as, with one man on, and with one man out, Hunter Pence hits an RBI double, knocking in Shane Victorino, who had earlier singled, then moved up to second base on Jimmy Rollins’ ground...

Gerrit Cole's debut (and other minor league miscellanea)

Gerrit Cole makes his first start for the Bradenton Marauders tonight at 6:35, which is one of those moments that you hope we can look back at in five years and say it was meaningful for the Pirates and all of us Pirate fans. I'm not sure who/if anyone will be at the game, in terms of Pirate writers and bloggers and scouting types, but I'll do my best to look for some first...

Game 3: Pirates 5 Phillies 4

When the Pirates fell behind the Phillies 4-1 in the top of the seventh, it was hard to feel that they didn't deserve the deficit. Garrett Jones double-clutched away an inning-ending double play chance in the first inning, which left Shane Victorino on second base with two outs. James McDonald made a bad pitch, and Hunter Pence hammered it for a run-scoring double. In the fourth...

Padres acquire Brian Tallet from the Pirates

The 0-3 San Diego Padres have acquired left-handed pitcher Brain Tallet from the Pirates, Corey Brock of MLB.com reports. Tallet will report to Triple-A initially but will probably be called up at some point this season, and just like must pitchers on the decline that land in San Diego, he will probably pitch lights out and revitalize his career. The Pirates will either receive cash...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Philadelphia Phillies – Game 3

Another close game, but this time the Bucs win! The Bucs win! Seriously though, they can’t afford to lose many games where they only give up one or two runs. And what is more gratifying than a walk-off infield single? It sure was nice of the Pirates to put the Phillies away though, ending a [...]
